Iowa Statehouse Dome Square(Des Moines, IA) Senate Democrats declared war on Iowa property taxpayers and our rural communities during yesterday’s education debate on supplemental state aid for schools.

Senator Tony Bisignano (D-Des Moines) said he would sponsor a bill that would raise Iowans’ property taxes by hundreds of millions of dollars.  Minutes later, Senator Joe Bolkcom (D-Iowa City) said he would end initiatives for job creators who have employed thousands of hard-working Iowans.

“It appears Senate Democrats declared war on Iowa property taxpayers and our rural communities,” said Senate Republican Leader Bill Dix (R-Shell Rock).

“Senate Democrats continue to demonstrate a clear lack of understanding for the struggles facing Main Street businesses, the mechanic we rely upon to help us commute to work and the daycares we entrust with our children,” Senator Dix said.  “Suggesting something as irresponsible as raising taxes on our hard-working Iowans and eliminating tools that are essential to creating jobs across Iowa would be a devastating blow to our state’s economy and our rural communities.

“Today, Senate Democrats blamed property taxpayers and job creators for the perceived shortfall in education funding. The blame falls on Senate Democrats who continue to demonstrate they have a never-ending appetite for other people’s money.”
