On the 36th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision I thought it would be appropriate to share ways in which those who are pro-life can help unborn babies and their mothers.  These ideas are not my own, but come from a very excellent resource, a book called Pro Life Answers to Pro Choice Arguments by Randy Alcorn (2000, Multnomah).  I highly, highly recommend this book.  I thought I’d share the first 25 today, and the rest tomorrow.

Direct Personal Involvement

  1. Open your home to a pregnant girl.
  2. Open your home to an “unwanted” child for foster care or adoption.
  3. Volunteer time with organizations that help the marginalized.  Alcorn states that “personal care is the most basic pro-life activity.”
  4. Establish a pregnancy counseling and abortion alternative service.
  5. Donate materials & money to pregnancy centers, Birthright, Bethany Christian Services and other pro-life groups.
  6. Teach your children and other young people how to say no to premarital sex.

Educating Yourself and Others

  1. Become thoroughly informed about the abortion issue.
  2. Talk to your friends, neighbors and coworkers.
  3. Volunteer your services as a pro-life speaker.
  4. Promote discussion of abortion in internet chat rooms.
  5. Students: write papers, make speeches, and start a campus prlife group.
  6. Display attractive pro-life posters and information at your office or shop.

Literature, Visuals and Advertising

  1. Order and distribute pro-life literature.
  2. Donate pro-life books and magazine subscriptions to public and school libraries.
  3. Use a pre-made pro-life slide presentation, assemble your own or buy a DVD/Video and offer to show it.
  4. Wear pro-life symbols.
  5. Place newspaper ads, bench ads, and billboard posters.

Letter Writing

  1. Write letters to the editor.
  2. Compile a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of politicians, newspapers, TV stations, hospitals and others in your area that people can contact to express their pro-life views.  Distribute them widely.
  3. Select the most strategic measures and issues and host a pro-life letter-writing party.
  4. Write letters of encouragement to the sometimes tired and discouraged pro-life activists.

Personal Conversation

  1. Refuse any indirect or business support of abortion clinics and explain your refusal.
  2. Contact physicians and hospitals that perform abortions – and insurance companies that cover them – and express your convictions.
  3. Talk to journalists about your concern that they accurately represent the pro-life side in their reporting.
  4. Talk to teachers, especially junior high, high school, and college teachers.  Express your desire that they understand and be able to represent the pro-life position rather than ignore it or distort it.
