The Nashville Post is reporting that Chip Saltsman has withdrawn from the race.  I had endorsed him when he first announced his candidacy because of his work on Mike Huckabee’s campaign and his leadership of the Tennessee GOP,  but felt that his chances were permanently damaged by CD-gate.

Apparently it didn’t even look like he was going to make it on the ballot for tomorrow’s today’s chair election.  After the debate that was held, I was impressed with Ken Blackwell, and I’ve always admired Michael Steele.

But really, please anybody but Mike Duncan.  Please?

Big HT goes to Robert Stacy McCain.

Update: Mike Duncan pulled out, and after 4th ballot – Katon Dawson (SC GOP chair) – 62, Michael Steele (former Maryland Lt. Gov & GOPAC chair) – 60, Saul Anuzis (MI GOP Chair) – 31, and Ken Blackwell (Former Ohio Secretary of State) – 15.  I am thrilled that Duncan withdrew.  I am surprised that Blackwell isn’t doing better.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he pulls out before the 5th ballot.

5th Ballot Update: Michael Steele 79, Katon Dawson -69, Saul Anuzis – 20.  Like I suspected Ken Blackwell pulled out and endorsed Steele.  After the 5th ballot Anuzis pulls out and endorses no one.  To win this you need 85 votes, so onto a 6th ballot.

6th Ballot Update: Michael Steele elected the next RNC chairman – 91 votes to Katon Dawson’s 77.
