  1. I’ve changed my mind on Huckabee:

He’s soft on crime, and that’s something I just can’t support. He’s a great speaker and has a great personality, but I don’t think he’s right for the presidency.

I’ll take him at his word on the DuMond case, but there’s no getting past his commutation of the sentences of 11 convicted murderers. I’m all for forgiveness in inter-personal relationships, but the government has no business forgiving rightfully convicted criminals.

  4. I don’t know – Governors commute sentences all of the time. The commutations that he gave were to just make them parole eligible, he didn’t release them. That was up to the parole board.

He is the only candidate that presided over 17 executions… can’t say that makes him soft on crime. Also the crime rate in Arkansas was lowered during his terms as Governor.

Commutation is not the same as forgiveness, it isn’t a pardon – he didn’t issue any of those. Besides how well do you know the facts of the cases he commuted?

Update – I just skimmed through the NY Sun article you provided a link to. I hope that wasn’t supposed to be a news article, becasue is read like an opinion piece written by the Romney or Giuliani campaign.

  7. Shane,

I hope it’s as irrelevant as you suggest. I don’t like the idea of making convicted murderers eligible for parole. I don’t think it should be done, even if it is commonplace. Murderers have taken the life of innocent human beings, and the punishment for that should not be negotiable.

I will still vote for Huckabee if he gets the nomination, but I don’t think I can root for him anymore.

  10. Casey,

I understand where you are coming from. Another thing to look at as well is what type of charge? Was it first degree (premeditated murder) or a lesser charge. I think that does make a difference as well. I’ve made my choice for the nomination process, and I also would be able to support in a general election a number of the GOP candidates (I may have to go third party or just not vote for president if Giuliani is nominated, I’m not sure.).

  13. That’s true. Whatever happens, I keep praying that we elect the right person for the job come November 2008.
