  1. Shane great site – I really like all the effort put in and the conversations that do happen – excellent way to facilitate!

My comment is why does the Christian community seem to want to be against Barack Obama?

SocietyVss last blog post..On the Quest For Expertise!

  4. Hey Society, thanks!

I would say it is mainly to do with his position on abortion, gay marriage, and I think that many social conservatives are concerned about state messing with church. Not really unlike what you are seeing up in Canada with it being illegal to say anything negative about homosexuality.

Some are against his tax policies, but I would say that is more of a conservative position than a Christian one. One could argue though that it isn’t the State’s role to take care of the poor – it is the church’s so the State shouldn’t be in the social welfare business. That is a Libertarian approach. Also people argue that his approach to taxes on businesses will end up hurting the very people he wants to help through jobs that will be cut when taxes are raised.

Then many social conservatives are also defense conservatives and they view him as being weak in that area. Again, not really a Christian conviction, but Biblically one of the functions of the State is defense and justice (Romans 13).

You do have a contingent of evangelicals on the left that LOVE Obama. They are usually younger evangelicals. Groups that represent them would be Sojourners, and there is a new Political Action Committee out there called the Matthew 25 Network.

For me, the #1 issue is his abortion stance, then gay marriage, but ultimately and pragmatically I think he is naive and inexperienced. I also think I pay quite enough in taxes – I want something left to render unto God, Ceasar’s taking waaaaaay toooooooo much ;).
