Not a real surprise since many had a real watered down definition of what it means to be “Christian” (American = Christian).

Barna reports:

For much of America’s history, the assumption was that if you were born in America, you would affiliate with the Christian faith. A new nationwide survey by The Barna Group, however, indicates that people’s views have changed. The study discovered that half of all adults now contend that Christianity is just one of many options that Americans choose from and that a huge majority of adults pick and choose what they believe rather than adopt a church or denomination’s slate of beliefs. Still, most people say their faith is becoming increasingly important as a source of personal moral guidance.

  1. Actually, I think that this is just as well.

If people assume that they’re Christians because they’re Americans, then we’re at risk of watering down the Truth just to get along.

To the extent that one could ever argue that the US was a Christian nation, it certainly is not one anymore. We might as well be honest about that, and move on to the fact that there is no such thing as a Christian nation, but that there could be a nation of Christians, and work on witnessing to people, which is what we’re supposed to be doing, anyway.

  4. We are definitely in a post-Christian culture in the US. It may well be the best thing for the church because in the past the greatest growth always came out of adversity and persecution.

We as Americans take too much for granted in many aspects of our lives. We are not God’s chosen people, the nation if Israel is. And look at how He needed to rebuke them in times of disobedience. America may be lucky we are not chosen, are we would be in for quite the whipping ourselves.
