Updates below:

What kind of pig do you have to be to make a joke about a 14-year-old girl getting raped (which is what it would be) by a New York Yankee?

That is exactly what he did with Todd and Sarah Palin’s daughter, Willow on Monday night, saying that “she was knocked up by Alex Rodriquez.”

He also made an inappropriate comment about Governor Palin in his top 10 list on Monday saying that:

2. Bought makeup from Bloomingdale’s to update her "slutty flight attendant" look

That was bad, but this is beyond the pale.  Not surprisingly the New York Times covers Letterman’s joke up.  Would they have done the same if it were a conservative radio talk show host making a comment about Michelle Obama or his daughters?  Absolutely not.  Would Letterman make comments like this about liberal women and their daughters?

No.  And he shouldn’t.  No one deserves to be talked about this way, let alone a 14-year-old kid who had no say about being in the public spotlight.  Her crime?  Going on a trip with her mom, who happens to be someone the left despises.

Governor Palin and her husband Todd both issued statements about Letterman:

“Any ‘jokes’ about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too." – Todd Palin

"Concerning Letterman’s comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he’d ever dare make such comments about anyone else’s daughter): ‘Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands — that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.” – Governor Sarah Palin

This type of “entertainment” is perverted.  It is inappropriate, and it should not go unchecked.  Conservatives 4 Palin listed some contact information to CBS, and a list of Letterman’s sponsors.  We need to send a clear message that jokes like this about ANYBODY’s teenage daughter (or son for that matter) is wrong, disgusting and unconscionable.

Please at the very least, regardless of your political persuasion, contact CBS.  What if this was your daughter he was talking about?

2nd Update: Some additional sponsors can be found here.

3rd Update: the folks at Hillbuzz (a pro-Hillary Clinton blog) says – Not. On. Our. Watch.  I commend them for standing up, but I’m just wondering why the silence from other Democrats?  Why don’t we have feminists on the left standing up and crying foul!?

4th Update: Other reactions from around the blogosphere.

Tabitha Hale – “Hijacking The Feminist Movement”

The sheer hatred expressed toward Palin has not died down, even though she has not been a national candidate for seven months now. Letterman’s Top 10 list this week was centered around her trip to New York, cracking jokes about her “slutty flight attendant” look. Note that there is nothing “slutty” about Palin’s look – she’s simply a beautiful woman who wears nice clothes. Not only that, he cracked jokes about her 14 year old daughter getting “knocked up” during the 7th inning. Seems to be a trend among liberal men. And these things still elicit laughter. Hahaha! Statutory rape!! Haha! It’s disgusting.

Kate Stokes – “sarah palin, david letterman, and decency”

if david letterman had referred to a female democratic politician as he did to sarah palin, then joked about her fourteen-year-old daughter being raped, liberal heads would be exploding all over the country; the media would cover it night and day; letterman would be imus’d; and obama would release a statement within hours.

Josh Painter – “Todd and Sarah are not amused”

The sexualization of young girls by Hollyweirdos and other media scum contributes to the moral decay that is unravelling the fabric of our society, and it places them at greater risk.

Rob Harrison – “David Letterman is despicable”

This should not be a liberal/conservative issue… the divide here should be between people who think it’s appropriate to make crude sexual comments about women, particularly in public and particularly underage girls, and those who recognize that such things are sick and wrong and do not constitute appropriate public discourse. Don Imus got fired for less; in a just world, David Letterman would receive the same fate.

Fausta – “Vile”

Attacking women for political purposes is an old story that is despicable and vile enough, but what is it with these impotent jerks and Palin’s children?

The title says it all with this one – “Aging man, 62, jokes about girl, 14” by Andrew Malcolm.

John Nolte – “Top Ten Possible Letterman Reactions to Fallout Over Willow Palin Rape ‘Joke’

Melissa Clouthier – “Sexist Leftist Of The Day

David Letterman made news for spewing sexist tripe about Sarah Palin, but more than that, making jokes about Palin’s 14 year old daughter–because, you know, it’s okay to talk about statutory rape if she’s a conservative women. They’re not people!

5th Update: David Letterman’s response

“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight’s show. "These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl…. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No." Saying he hopes he’s "cleared part of this up," Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

How can you try to even defend that?  He should apologize, period, not make excuses for himself.  Pathetic.

  1. Not only is “pig” too good for Letterman, it's insulting to all members of the porcine family.

You know, if I was Todd Palin, I think I'd hope on a plane to New York and punch Letterman in the mouth if it were my daughter.

I'd say “unbelievable,” but it's not. Just unconscionable.

  2. Shane…Shane…Shame on you. I thought as a conservative you would protect not thread on Dave's right to free speech. We really don't want to resurrect “ye ol' office of censorship” at any cost.
Where did he cross the line? Kids, teens and their friends generate most of the fodder for parents.
What he needs is for someone to send him a book on parenting, girls, to be reminded that he should spend more time praising her good points.
It was a joke in poor taste…don't laugh! Change the channel.
I'm known to do that during 90% of my network television viewing.

I can't ride with you on this one.

  3. David has the right to make disgusting jokes, and I have the right to protest. We are both exercising our First Amendment rights.

When it comes to making sexual jokes about a 14-year-old, he crosses the line.

  4. Let's see how broad-minded David Letterman's sense of humor is. Circulate this riddle far and wide:
Riddle: Was that slut that David Letterman slept with last night a crack whore or his wife?
    Answer: Both.

  5. writeonbro: Free speech rights have to do with government intervention, not public outrage. Shane is not advocating, nor am I, that the government take legal action against Letterman… Letterman is within his constitutional rights to be a pig. The public consumers and supporters of his product also have a right to speak out against his product and to squeeze him financially through his advertisers. What you answered as the solution (switching to another channel) is actually the same thing as speaking out, but at a less emphatic level. The “switching to another channel” answer is, however, less confrontational and less engaging and is the very mindset that has caused us to allow all kinds of unacceptable and de-humanizing content become the norm in our society. Speaking against bad behavior is not only appropriate, it is necessary.

  6. So what, is he saying that he didn't know it was Willow on the trip, thought it was Bristol, and that is his excuse? Typical.

  7. Unfortunately he's too stupid to see who was actually at the game. And I know joking about an 18-year-old in that matter is just oh so much better.

    It's indefensible, he's a pig.

  8. I will not watch/listen to David Letterman’s late night show. I find what he said about the Palin family very discussing. Surely he can find other topics to discuss on his show that don’t include ridiculing children. I find Mr. Letterman’s jokes to be degrading and most of the time stupid!!!

  10. I think the jokes are just fine. I never thought that they were about the younger daughter. I always thought they were about the slut who got pregnant. Sarah Palin is in the public eye and if she brings here children to public events then they all have to suffer the consequences. If you are trying to put forth a wholesome family image don't bring your tramp daughter into the public eye and expect me to embrace her.
If you are in politics, or entertainment, or professional sports you have to expect to be scrutinized and ridiculed.
It is sad but true this world is not perfect. Humans HATE others who do not think as they think, do as they do. Just look at many of comments on this site. You call David Letterman a pig for making a joke that you don't like. I think it is hilarious how no one is putting down Sarah Palin for mainstreaming her tramp daughter and bastard grandchild. Is it okay because she is not on welfare? I would not be parading around my failure as a parent especially if I wanted to be President of the USA. If Palin cannot guide one child how can she lead a nation?

  11. On what planet, in what circle, in whose universe are those comments considered a “Joke”? I’m a husband and a father of a young girl. What difference does it make if the young woman is 14 or 19? Are the writers so intellectually challenged that they cannot come up with good material?
I guess when have “progressed” past the point of no return!
Count me out. I’ll never watch DL again. I will urge all family and friends to do the same.

  12. Talk about people who live in glass houses: David Letterman knocked up his mistress before they were married and had an illigitimate child. By his sexist comments, he demeaned all women and engaged in verbal sexual abuse toward a child. This unfunny old hasbeen is probably impotent and is compelled to toilet talk to satisfy himself. I hope his juvenile, (senile?) hateful, sickening stench is taken off the airwaves!

  13. DAVID LETTERMAN SHOULD BE FIRED !!!!!!!!

IF THIS IS FUNNY TO PUT CHILDREN INTO A JOKE THAT IS VIOLENT , THEN HE SHOULD BE PUT ON ONLY ADULT TV AND FIRED FROM REACHING THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND GIVING IDEAS TO HARM CHILDREN.

  14. I think his show should be cancelled immediatly, not matter what, I think most of what he says is trash and would not watch such filfth, just heard about it on Fox and Friends, and believe me when I say, that if one of them would have made that comment, they would have not made it to the next commerical.
I guess being immoral is what sells and pays his bills. I guess he does not think that much about his family, they are the ones who will end up suffering from this…maybe they cannot stand him either, they just like his money…

  15. Oh, yeah like Obama was telling the truth about his birthplace, he is a muslim you know he is he called the Koran a holy book excuse me.
He is a LIAR from the word go.
Just because you have a child out of wedlock does not make one a slut or a tramp at least Sarah has not covered up her life like the Obama's have, they one have told the truth before or since they have taken office….where is his birth certificate.

  16. Having David Lettermen apologize and say “I was talking about the older daughter of Sara Palin” is ever more sick. What right does he think he has to make a comment like that about any young girl ? He is just another example of sick celebrity types in this country that think being responsible for their actions is beneath them. Keep your apologies Lettermen. I for one will never watch him again, and if all of America will do the same on issues like this mabye they will wake some of these jerks up.

  17. 14 or 45 any female that has a bastard child out of wedlock is a slut and she cannot deny that. If you do that on the national news, do not “boo hoo” everyone calling you a slut and treating you as such. Shame on her mother for not teaching her Christian morals.

  18. Thanks for your comment Kay, I stopped watching him long ago. If CBS doesn't address this properly looking at turning them off as well. Also need to encourage sponsors to not support misogyny whether it comes in the form of a “joke” or not.

  19. No, jokes like that are not fine. And I'd say David Letterman is the last person who should make fun of anybody having a baby out of wedlock don't you think?

If you are in politics you can expect that treatment of yourself, but not your kids. Obama's kids are off limits. Bush's daughters should have been off limits (but weren't by many in the left). Chelsea Clinton needs to be off limits as well.

She brings her kids with her so she can spend time with them. It is called being a PARENT.

I'm also impressed with your non-judgmental attitude. Wow. Bristol, made a mistake, and now she is trying to make the best of it. She doesn't deserve this angst.

Also, do you have kids? If so, especially as they get older you'll realize that they are going to make choices and decision and behave in ways you don't approve of at times. They are free moral agents. It doesn't mean you failed as a parent. I suppose you probably think they should have encouraged her to have an abortion as well. They put their child and their grandchild before their image and that is commendable.

  20. You would think that CBS would finally understand why he got beat by Leno, and now Conan O'Brien. He's just not funny. If you have to defend a joke, then it isn't funny. Period.

  21. You are making an assumption that the Palins didn't teach Bristol. You obviously don't have kids or work with teenagers because if you did you'd realize that they are free moral agents and will make decisions occasionally that will disappoint parents. Not always life-changing like this, but they will nonetheless.

I'm curious – one thing I don't call girls sluts regardless of how sexually active they are. Name calling doesn't address the issue. What do you call the guys? I mean it takes two. Also, are they only sluts if they have the baby and not if say she had an abortion? Not that I agree with calling kids sluts regardless.

I suppose you consider yourself a feminist as well. Which would be laughable.

  22. He's a comedian. They say stupid insulting things about anyone with public fame as part of their practice. There have been far worse things said about other female figures of all ages over the years. It's all about a perception that some amongt us are somehow holy and above being the brunt of crude humor or other mere mortal annoyances. If you don't want anyone poking fun at you or your family then stay out of the spotlight and don't air your dirty laundry in public.

  23. Ahh, so this is the defense of the Left: two wrongs make a right, as long as they're committed *against* the Right.

As for your attitude–what a wonderful way to ensure that only the shameless and the conscienceless ever run for political office.

  24. You know, kids have always been off limits. He crossed the line. I can bet that if a conservative made fun of Obama's girls or Chelsea Clinton you'd be up in arms. I would as well. Which means at least I have a consistent position.

  25. A disapointment would have been not being valedictorian or not being starting quarterback.
Having a child out of wedlock is an abomination no matter what age.
Promiscuity is wrong by male or female. It should not be celebrated by being in the news by- isn't it great she is keeping the baby how brave she is how wonderful the family is supportive blah blah blah blah
Use a commination to call a spade a spade, call a rose a rose.

Slut : A PERSON, especially a woman, considered sexually promiscuous.
feminism : Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.
feminist : A person whose beliefs and behavior are based on feminism.
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

I assumed that Palin tried to teach morality but is ineffective. Which worries me about her being leader of the free world.

    What do consider a feminist?
I do not think of myself as anything other than another human being living on this planet.
I give deference to both sexes.
I do not call someone a pig because I find his act boorish.
Just because I disagree with someone, does not make me right and them wrong. I have learned everyone has the right to their own opinion.
I refuse to be brought down by the overbearing nay sayers. The world needs to learn that it can be a win-win situation.

  26. The fact that “slut” is now in our dictionary is a good indicator of how far our society has devolved.

I'm not celebrating promiscuity and neither are they. I'm sure they would have preferred to keep the matter private had it not been leaked all over the news. No where have they ever promoted kids being promiscuous.

Exactly how would you have had them handle Bristol? Throw her out of the house? Make her have an abortion? Disown her?

They responded the best way they could in the circumstances they found themselves in.

Sorry you can't see that, and I'm sorry you can't see Letterman for who he is. I'm sick of crap being defended with they phrase “it was only a joke.”

  27. I am sorry that you don't get it.
We ALL have the right to our own opinions.
The world is shades of grey.
All we have to prove our humanity is tolerance and respect for EVERYONE's opinion.
    You don't have to agree.
    You can't change me/I can't change you.

(slut has been in books since the 1700's it is not a modern term)

  28. See that is where I don't agree with you. There is grey, but there is also black and white, right and wrong, and no not every opinion is equally valid.

He does have the constitutional right to say what he said, and I have the right to disagree and think he is being a misogynic pig.

We will have to agree to disagree.

I would just like to see some civility in political discourse.

  29. To Ms. Colleen Kay,
You called Gov. Palen's daughter a tramp and her grandson a bastard. Can you prove her daughter is a “tramp”? According to the Americam Heritage dictionary, one definition of a tramp is #4 a prostitute, so you are calling her a prostitute. Yes her grandson is a bastard in the true meaning of the word, but that doesn't give anyone the right to try and make a living by smearing other people.
Someday you may have to eat those words

  30. Who is he to judge Bristol Palin's sexual conduct when he didn't mary his own pregnant girlfriend? Besides Bristol was just a 17 year old kid. What's his excuse? And what's with his sexual obsession with Sarah Palin and her daughters? Pervert indeed!

  31. David Letterman needs to get over himself. He would not like people making fun of his son. I was glad he decided to marry the baby mother.
How would he have liked it comedians had called the child names. I have
not watched David Letterman in years. His ego is too big for me. I also
    decided, money doesn't buy class.

  32. If you are calling a teenage girl who got pregnant a “slut”, then what do you call David Letterman's girlfriend (now wife) who he “knocked up”?

  33. Letterman should be forced to retire. He is a disgrace to CBS. I will not watch CBS as long as Letterman is on air. This is the day of cable and we have choices of TV shows to spend our time watching. The hills of Montana are calling Dave. I hope a flight attendant drops coffee on his private parts on his flight home.

  34. E. Horton,
You are saying that anyone in the spotlight's children deserve comments like this. How would E. Horton comment if Conan O'Brien made a statement like that about the Obama girls??? Is that acceptable E. Horton???

  35. Amen to Ticked in Texas. I am not watching CBS until Letterman is off the air. We have too many stations to choose from today. I will not eat at Burger King , buy Kraft Foods, and any of the other sponsors of the Letterman show. If you sponsor trash then you do not get my CASH.
    Letterman needs to GO

  36. Christian morals. Christ forgave the sinner and said go and sin no more. This Child made a mistake at 17. She finished high school while getting up in the night with an infant and today is in college. You attack hr mom for the mistake of the teenager. Mom like Christ forgave, supports her and the child and loves them both. I pray for you Kay Western that you will have a loving and forgiving heart like Christ one day. Someone has only taught you rules and left out the love.

  37. I think you will see real soon that the FCC has rules and guidelines that Dave did not follow. That is why he changed his story TWO DAYS LATER to the 18 yr old child as CBS lawyers have warned him about the FCC guidelines. Dave should be off the air. His ratings are not worth what this is going to cost CBS

  38. it certainly isn't a liberal/conservative issue. Its all about the run away perversion that has taken over the medias ever since porn was brought to the internet by Men for Men. Its about time men took action for the blight they created against the gender that gave them all life.

  39. Sarah Palin should apologize to the American people for running for vice-president. How shameful that someone so incompetent should insult the US people by wanting to run our country. Thank God, yes, God, that he made the votes see the foolishness of her actions.

  40. David Letterman has crossed the “point of no return.” He should be fired.

Never again in this lifetime will I watch the Letterman show.

  41. Sad that Letterman had to sink so low to receive all this attention. That was no joke..he is. He is not a comedian, he's nothing but a buffoon, pandering to the type of audience that feels the same way he does about “jokes” that are degrading and viscious. If this is what you feel will up your ratings, think again..not all the people found your “joke” funny, in fact, you started a crusade against this kind of comment. Wake up and act like a “man”, but evidently you have no idea how a real man acts. I will be contacting many of your sponsors.. I don't believe they will support you in the future. As far as you apologizing, forget it, not many believed it to be sincere. You started to feel the heat from this remark and that's the only reason you apologized. Remember..”What goes around, comes around”, and it may be sooner than you imagine.
