This is one major reason why. Small government and less government intrusion yes, complete degradation… and total social license, no.
Disclaimer: By the way, I, in no way, am implying that everyone who is part of the Libertarian Party or who considers themselves Libertarian believes the same way. This is a reason why I can’t embrace libertarianism, but at the same time embrace some libertarian principles.

@Kansas Bob, That’s also why I included a disclaimer as well – I’m not painting all libertarians with a broad brush, but rather why I can’t embrace the whole philosophy… only parts of it.

I must admit, I’ve got an emotional reason for refusing to self-identify as Libertarian– even though there are a decent number of socially conservative libertarians; I cannot STAND the unusually high number of folks who insist we live in a “police state,” while they drive around with bumper stickers that say “9/11 was an inside job.” The utter disconnect from reality is just too much– it’s a step below the abortion mindset, because it doesn’t result in as many dead babies (yet), but it’s still a flat denial of reality. (Helpful hint: in a police state, you wouldn’t be able to complain about how horrible a police state we live in….)

@Foxfier, great point about police states. Yeah there is no freedom of speech, press or assembly in police states.
This is the difference between “libertarian” and “libertine.” Libertarians believe strongly in limited government and individual free will. Libertines will ignore the consequences of that free will, which left to run rampant eventually leads to anarchy and complete degradation of society.
@Josh Marihugh, thanks for pointing out the difference. You are right, what that article describes is libertine.
Had never heard of “cultural libertarianism” Shane.. in the same way, I have heard of “social conservatism” but not “cultural conservatism”. What would consider to be the difference between the two? Just trying to understand where you are coming from.

@Kansas Bob, that is postmodern conservative’s term… I equate it with social libertarianism… or as Josh puts it being libertine.
Josh Marihugh makes a great point on the libertarian/libertine defenition. Gov. Jesse (Turnbuckle) Ventura tried to call himself a libertarian when he is the poster child for what a libertine would look like.
I’m in total agreement with you, Shane. But I might be a bit more libertarian than you are. Speaking as a Catholic, for instance, I actually disagree with the Iowa bishops somewhat on their public statement on gay marriage in that I believe marriage shouldn’t be regulated at all by the state but rather only by the Church (protestant or Catholic) or by individual religious communities of other stripes (ref: freedom of religion).
I think the worst thing that ever happened to the institution of marriage in America was its becoming a “state” institution (being validly performed in courthouses) rather than strictly performed within religious communities.
On the abortion matter, that is where I have my big disagreement with the Libertarian view because the Constitution guarantees the right to life……but (let me digress a bit) I am satisfied, as I’m 100% certain you are, that perfect justice will not come Incarnate until The Day.
I love that you seem to understand that this world is rather like the Titanic and all attempts to captain it are exercises in pride……but (and I know you also agree) our job is to help save those we can while we can.
I think Libertarians tend to understand that we’re on the Titanic, but they want to go down partying or something before the “absolute end”. Thanks be to God that you and I know there is no absolute end. We have a share in the Life of Christ, hence we are immortal.
So, while I agree with the Libertarians somewhat on particulars, I disagree with them on the deeper level.
