When thinking about the President Obama’s address to students next week on 9/8, my primary objection is the classroom activity guides, not the content of his speech.  No I don’t think he’s going to go on and brainwash kids into thinking “wealth redistribution is good,” etc.

What I’m primarily concerned about is how this will be handled by teachers who voted for Obama, will this be education or indoctrination?  These lesson plans do not provide opportunities for critical thinking and dissent, and Stuart Shepherd from Citizen Link encourages young people who do end up watching his speech to engage in critical thinking and participate.

  1. Anyone that expects the vast, vast majority of 12 years olds (and under) to engage in critical thinking is way, way overestimating the average Spongebob-watching kid. (And for the record, I love Spongbob.)

  2. America has been purposely dumbed down for decades. Like Russia is drowned in alcohol. USA is being drowned in non-sense and junk food. When the nation cares more for the color of celebrity`s underwear, than it does for global hunger- we`ve got a problem. I think it is very good that Mr.Obama addressed the youth and it is alarming to see the amount of criticism he receives, for trying to inspire and enable our children.

  3. it`s just so sad ! Sorry guys if i sounded harsh, it was not directed at you its the result of me watching CNN`s , i guess. It is revolting to witness the amount of negativity and and hate-mongering going on there…
Great blog Shane ,by the way !

  4. Many of the schools in this area are boycotting the speech.

Heard it said this morning that the office of the president was respected up until GHW Bush. Tend to agree.. guess the office will just never be the same.

And I do understand that your objection is with the activity guides.. but many take issue with the president speaking to our kids.. hence our school children will witness their school officials disrespecting the office of the president.. great example.
