mattschultz Council Bluffs, Iowa – September 15, 2010 – Councilman Matt Schultz won a competitive primary in June to become the Republican nominee for Iowa Secretary of State. Schultz largely credits his success to the fact that he supports a law requiring all voters to show a Photo ID before they vote.

Michael Mauro has made several media appearances recently including Iowa Press and the radio show Max World Live where he discusses Photo ID legislation.

"Michael Mauro is lying about Iowa law and a Photo ID. Mauro has been telling half truths when referring to Photo ID requirements. He has implied that showing a Photo ID when you register to vote on Election Day means that everyone has to show a Photo ID before they vote. This is not true," said Schultz.

Only voters who register to vote at the polls on Election Day have to show a Photo ID. In the June primary less than 1% of people registered on Election Day requiring them to show a Photo ID. That means 99% of voters did not have to show a Photo ID before they cast their vote.

"My opponent cannot hide the fact that he opposes Photo ID legislation. I am the only candidate running for Secretary of State who believes that everyone should show a Photo ID before they vote. It is time for Michael Mauro to come clean and admit that he is against everyone showing a Photo ID before they vote at the polls," said Schultz.

Councilman Schultz points to the fact that Michael Mauro is financially supported by the Secretary of State Project, a liberal organization funded by individuals like George Soros. The Secretary of State Project opposes Photo ID legislation and only supports candidates who agree with their positions. The Secretary of State Project outlines its positions on the 2010 races page of their website at this link http://ow.ly/1qRkfX.

Matt Schultz was first elected to the Council Bluffs City Council in 2005 and is in his second term. Matt Schultz won the Republican nomination for Secretary of State in a three way primary in June. He is a graduate of Creighton Law School and the University of Iowa. Matt is married with three children and is an Attorney at the law firm of Schultz & Watson, LLP.
