Exterior of Ronald Reagan LibraryGovernor Mike Huckabee talked to reporters this weekend at the Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon Presidential Libraries in California while on a book tour for his new children’s book  Can’t Wait Till Christmas.  Among those reporters was KADY-TV* reporter Maria Sanchez.  Huckabee said:

“Whoever in our government leaked that information is guilty of treason and I think anything less than execution is too kind a penalty.    They have put American lives at risk.   They have put relations that will take decades to rebuild at risk.  They knew well they were handling sensitive documents.   They were entrusted.   Anyone who had access to that level of information was not only a person who understood what their rules were, but they also signed under oath a committment they would not violate it.   They did.   And I believe they have committed treason against this country and any lives they endangered they’re personally responsible for and the blood is on their hands.”

“And in addition to their reckless irresponsibility and act of criminal intent I think the New York Times has shown an utter reckless disregard for any responsible journalism by printing something they know they obtained in a way that is not appropriate.”

This matches and surpasses the tough talk of US Representative Pete King of NY who yesterday suggested that the website that leaked the documents to the public be considered a terrorist organization and be shut down.  Whether or not we will be able to find the government leakers is yet to be determined.  Some are already trying to make political hay by putting the blame on the Obama Government alone.  I think it is too premature for that.   Other pundits have suggested that this whole problem originated out of the desire to break down the wall of separation between the CIA, FBI and other law enforcement agencies created by Jamie Gorelic during the Clintion administration.  Again, too early.

But taking this leak seriously and telling us what ought to be done to the traiors, if and when they are found, is never too early.  It is a matter of principle, not politics.
