imageEven though former Speaker Newt Gingrich says he’s staying in the race it is hard to believe that given his campaign in imploding.

Rick Tyler, Gingrich’s spokesman, said he, campaign manager Rob Johnson and senior strategists had resigned, along with aides in the early primary and caucus states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Other officials said Gingrich was informed that his entire high command was quitting in a meeting earlier in the day. They cited differences over the direction of the campaign but were not more specific.

The officials declined to be identified by name, saying they were not authorized to discuss private conversations.

Gingrich told the group he intends to stay in the race, they added.

Well it would seem his campaign pretty much ended in its first week… and this follows news of a key staff member in Iowa leaving.  I don’t blame the guy for taking a vacation though, he got pretty well beat up, but he obviously lacks the passion to run.  I don’t even see how he could possibly salvage his campaign at this point.

Update: Statement from Newt Gingrich just arrived in my inbox.

I am committed to running the substantive, solutions-oriented campaign I set out to run earlier this spring. The campaign begins anew Sunday in Los Angeles.

But is he committed to actually do what he needs to do to win?  That’s the question.

  1. Gingrich was toast even before everyone wisely quit.  “Pelosi’s couch” and “DeDe Scozzafava” were enough to prevent any TEA Party member from voting for him.  Gingrich was done as a politician before he started.  This just makes it official.

As I wrote in an article a while back elsewhere, Gingrich saw the giant that is American Conservatism awakening in 1994 and did his best to lullaby the giant with his “Contract with America.”  And shortly thereafter, he and the Republican Power Structure ran away from the Conservative base.  And that is the huge contributing factor for the elections of 2006 and 2008.

Gingrich is done.  And that’s good for America.  Let him return to “pundit” status because he is nominally valuable in that position.  The rest?  Nah.
