imageWith 16,892 votes cast today… which is more than the 2007 (14,302) Ames Straw Poll.  The winner is Michele Bachmann

  1. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN) – 4823
  2. Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) – 4671
  3. Former Governor Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) – 2293
  4. Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) – 1657
  5. Herman Cain – 1456
  6. Governor Rick Perry (R-TX) – 718
  7. Former Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) – 567
  8. Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) – 385
  9. Former Governor and Ambassador Jon Huntsman (R-UT) – 69
  10. Congressman Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) – 35

There were scattered 162 votes that were scattered.  Some quick thoughts, Congresswoman Bachmann solidified her position as the frontrunner in Iowa.  Congressman Paul’s support was motivated as well, and he has gained round in Iowa since 2007.  I just have doubts on how that will translate on Caucus night.  I don’t see how Herman Cain continues after this.  Rick Santorum exceeded expectations, and I believe that will help him continue on in the process if he can capitalize with fundraising.  Governor Pawlenty has to wonder with his organization in Iowa how he came in 3rd 2400 votes behind Paul.  I had heard that his campaign was rather loose with who they were giving tickets to, not ensuring that those tickets would result in votes for him.  He’s hemorrhaging cash, and I have to wonder how long he’s going to be to stay in it.

Texas Governor Rick Perry just announcing today, not having a presence here, and not even being on the ballot has to be pleased with the outcome.  Coming in 6th as a write-in is a historic.  I doubt Congressman McCotter will be in long after this showing.  It’s likely that Gingrich will stay in to focus on issues.
