voter-registration(Des Moines, IA) Voter registration numbers from the Iowa Secretary of State today show that, for the first time in years, there are more Republicans in Iowa than Democrats.

Iowa GOP Chairman A.J. Spiker stated:

“The failed policies of the Obama presidency and the Obama Democrats have opened the eyes of many voters to the benefits of the Republican Party ideals of lower taxes, less government intrusion, and the protection of individual liberty.  More than 1 in 10 Democrats have fled the Iowa Democrat Party since Barack Obama was elected President, and today for the first time in years, there are more registered Republicans than Democrats. Iowa Republicans will continue to work hard to promote the ideals of less government and more freedom and earn the support of even more Iowans this November.”

Voter registration totals announced today were:

  • Registered Iowa Republicans: 611,990
  • Registered Iowa Democrats: 607,999

  1. Interesting. But would part of it be because of the contested Republican presidential primary causing people to temporarily register Republican?

    1. Certainly that is part I’m sure, but they overcame a gap of 110K or so to get there. Huge gains were also made in 2010. It is interesting to note that registered independents are the largest group at 678,704 which explains why Iowa is constantly a swing state. Republicans are the largest group in the 3rd Congressional District outnumbering both Democrats and Independents. That doesn’t bode well for Congressman Boswell running against Congressman Latham. Republicans are also the largest group in the 4th Congressional District so unless Vilsack can capture 60-70% of the independent vote (which is highly unlikely) Congressman King’s seat is pretty safe.
