Planned Parenthood Clinic in St. Paul, MN

Washington, D.C. – The Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) condemned Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, for mandating that all of their clinics and facilities provide abortions.  Today, Planned Parenthood of South Central New York cited the national organization’s “abortion mandate” as the reason it is becoming independent. Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) previously mandated that each of its affiliates must have an abortion facility by 2013.

“Planned Parenthood’s mandate requiring that all affiliates provide abortions beginning in 2013 is the ultimate evidence that Planned Parenthood’s chief concern is making money off abortion – not the health of vulnerable women and girls,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.  “Planned Parenthood of South Central New York is the latest affiliate to become independent because it won’t comply with the rule. This mandate will no doubt result in an increase in revenue for Planned Parenthood as well as an increase in the more than 329,000 lives the abortion chain ends in one year. Does that sound like women’s health?”

In 2011, the Houston Chronicle reported that two Texas affiliates went independent after refusing to comply with  the corporate abortion mandate. One former employee said, “In state after state, you’ve seen that brand of Planned Parenthood used as synonymous with abortion services. And that’s the great sadness in all of this.” Similarly, former manager of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Storm Lake, Iowa, Sue Thayer, was fired after she questioned her affiliate bosses for mandating that her clinic provide “webcam abortions.” Ms. Thayer is now suing them for potential Medicaid waste, fraud, and abuse.

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion business, performing 329,445 abortions in 2010 alone. In 2010, abortions made up 91 percent of Planned Parenthood’s pregnancy services, while prenatal care and adoption referrals accounted for only 8.6 percent (31,098) and 0.2 percent (841), respectively.  For every adoption referral, they performed 392 abortions.
