muhlbauer-debateIowa State Representative Dan Muhlbauer (D-Manilla) in an interview with Douglas Burns of the Carroll Daily Times Herald said that it is time for a semi-automatic weapons ban in Iowa.  He said that the state of Iowa should take semi-automatic weapons away from Iowans who have legally purchased them prior to any ban that is enacted if they don’t give their weapons up in a buy back program.

He said he doesn’t care about re-election which is a good thing considering the asinine remarks he made on this issue.  Even U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein didn’t suggest a retroactive ban, so I’m not sure what State Representative Muhlbauer is thinking.

We cannot have big guns out here as far as the big guns that are out here, the semi-automatics and all of them. We can’t have those running around out here. Those are not hunting weapons. We should ban those in Iowa.

Even if you have them, I think we need to start taking them. We can’t have those out there. Because if they’re out there they’re just going to get circulated around to the wrong people. Those guns should not be in the public’s hands. There are just too many guns.

Somebody who lives in Carroll County should pull State Representative Dan Muhlbauer aside and remind him that the 2nd Amendment wasn’t written for just hunting.

Update 1/9/13: I wrote a 2nd piece for the Republican Party of Iowa with an audio of the interview, along with a transcript of the more controversial section of the interview.

  1. Big guns, Did he say, “Big” Guns? What does he mean by big? What a doofus…let me see…..what do those anti-gunners mean by big guns???
The AR-15 fires a .223 Remington cartridge (or 5.56×45 mm NATO) round which has a typical average velocity of 3,200 feet per second. .223 is the caliber or, “size” of the bullet. they range in weight from 55 grains to 62 grains or a smidgen more than a quarter of an ounce. We are talking about a projectile that is under a quarter of an inch, weighing an eight of an ounce….”fired from a scary black gun.”

We nick-named the AR rifles, “mouse guns”

On the other hand. there is the massive 50 caliber bullet, commonly known as the 50BMG. (.510 diameter bullet ) 650-800 grains(almost 1.5 – 2 oz.) in weight. Big guns? Perhaps the Bolt Action Rifle, .505 Gibbs? 375 H&H? 404 Jeffrey? 416 Rigby? .577 Nitro? All of them have MASSIVE, MASSIVE power. How about my .458 Socom? With the exception of the .458 Socom, Having fired them all, they left me bruised and sore. Those are big guns….

    not mouse guns.

    Big guns…..please define, Senator Gun-Grabber

  2. Rep. Muhlbauer (D., Stupid), is another of the doofi (plural of doofus), who knows doodle squat about weapons. My drill sergeant would have chewed this guy up and spit out bone fragments.

  3. We should ban cars and trucks because there are too many cars and trucks out there that can kill you. I’m thinkin a firearm ban is a joke you’re going to walk over my rights, freedoms and liberties I don’t think so!!

    1. Not all cars, just the scary “gasoline-powered” ones… they’re involved in most accidents after all.

What? He’s claiming “semi-automatic” is all he wants… an equally meaningful term in that is describes nearly all guns (but it sounds “scary” so they use it a lot).

  4. Dear Mr. Muhlbauer, please read the second amendment and then take a good look at our, and other countries, histories. The second amendment dosen’t just concern hunting guns, it is also there to insure that the common citizen has adequate protection from an oppressive and ignorant government, and by ignorant I mean the majority of congress.

  5. This is a typical communist tactic: taking freedoms to “guarantee” security! Maybe elected officials who oppose the Constitution so violently should be confiscated!

  6. Dear Iowans: Please research the possibility of making elections of State Representative subject to retroactive annulment.

  7. Fking a$$ clown. Go back to school and study history THEN come back and try to talk intelligently. Obviously this man is he** bent on power and would love nothing more than to be ruler of Iowa w/ the citizenry as his pets to do w/ as he pleases. I’d bet money all he does is own some land that and does no real work. Any rancher w/ half a brain would no what “big guns” are. Western Iowa…. WHAT is wrong w/ you people?

  8. I truly believe that Rep. Dan Muhlbauer should submit to a MRI of the head, as his mental capacity has diminished to a point that he is no longer capable of representing his district. (Perhaps he has served beyond his capabilities). Deadbeat!

  9. most importantly is who are the Iowans to sent this ‘guy’ to des Moines to be their ‘representative’? They need to recall him ASAP before he makes a bigger fool of THEM.
