DES MOINES – State Senator Jack Whitver (R-Ankeny) took the first steps to eliminate the Iowa state income tax by filing a bill in the Senate today.
Whitver, Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, feels the state income tax is a burden on the state’s economy. “There is no better way to add jobs and grow Iowa’s economy than the elimination of the state income tax,” Whitver said. “It is the perfect time for Iowa to begin this process.”
“It’s time to take a hard look at the state’s tax structure,” Whitver went on to say. “We must have a tax system that encourages production and positions Iowa to compete in the 21st century.”
Whitver’s bill proposes setting up a legislative committee that will meet after the 2013 Legislative Session has adjourned to examine how to eliminate the state income tax in the 2014 Legislative Session.
“We need a comprehensive examination that shows us what is and is not working for Iowans when it comes to taxation,” Whitver went on to say.
