chuck grassleyUrbandale, IA — On Thursday, March 14, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul introduced the “Life at Conception Act,” S.583, saying “the right to life is guaranteed to all Americans.”

The bill has 15 cosponsors, many from the Midwest, including Iowa’s Senator Chuck Grassley.

Bob Vander Plaats, President and CEO of The FAMiLY LEADER, a conservative grassroots organization in Iowa, commended Senators Paul and Grassley, saying, “THE FAMiLY LEADER has always maintained that life begins at conception.  It is far past time to update our laws to reflect this reality and protect the life of every American, from conception to natural death.”  Vander Plaats continued, “We want to thank Senators Paul and Grassley for their principled defense of life, and will work to help this bill become law.”

Senator Rand Paul’s office said the “Life at Conception” bill “does not amend or interpret the Constitution, but simply relies on the 14th Amendment, which specifically authorizes Congress to enforce its provisions.”

Section 1 of the 14th Amendment states:

“No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

“The Life at Conception Act legislatively declares what most Americans believe and what science has long known — that human life begins at the moment of conception, and therefore is entitled to legal protection,” Sen. Paul said.
