Washington, DC – Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) President Marjorie Dannenfelser today denounced the Obama Administration for opposing an order issued by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor temporarily blocking enforcement of the HHS abortion drug mandate for the Denver-based Little Sisters of the Poor.

“During the debate over the Affordable Care Act, President Obama assured Americans that religious freedom and conscience rights would be honored. As Obamacare rolls out, it’s obvious this could not be further from the truth. By opposing Justice Sotomayor’s injunction the Administration once again makes clear its intention to steamroll religious liberty and freedom of conscience, even for an order of nuns singularly dedicated to providing charitable care for the aged and infirm.

“Former Members of Congress including Reps. Bart Stupak and Kathy Dahlkemper have publicly decried the HHS Mandate as a direct violation of the abortion funding ‘compromise’ they thought they had secured with President Obama. It is outrageous that, despite this action by the Court and a string of judicial defeats regarding the mandate, the president and his administration carry on this war on our nation’s founding principles.”

The Susan B. Anthony List and the Charlotte Lozier Institute, the education and research arm of the SBA List, previously submitted a joint comment to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services condemning the mandate because of its impact on groups with pro-life convictions based on civil and ethical concerns and not just religious doctrine.
