(Cedar Falls, IA) Former Congressman Jim Nussle, who represented Iowa’s 1st Congressional District for 16 years, is endorsing State Representative Walt Rogers, who is running for that same seat.

Nussle, the last Republican to hold the seat, said, “As both a former Director of the Office of Management and Budget and a Congressman serving northeast Iowa who developed a reputation as a ‘fiscal hawk,’ I wholeheartedly endorse Walt Rogers. Walt’s message of ‘smaller, smarter government’ is exactly what’s needed in Washington, DC and will represent his constituents’ views quite well.” Nussle continued, “Walt’s a thoughtful conservative and one of the good guys; he will represent Iowa’s First Congressional District with honor, intelligence, and integrity.”

Nussle joins former Congressman Tom Tauke, who has also endorsed Rogers. Tauke represented the 1st Congressional District from 1981 to 1991; Nussle held the seat from 1991 until 2007.

Rogers said, “I am excited to have endorsements from both of the Republican Congressman who have represented this district in recent decades. For the two Republicans who have proven they know how to win elections in this district to endorse our campaign is an inspiring vote of confidence.”

The Rogers campaign is also announcing that it has met its fundraising goals for the 4th quarter of 2013, which is the campaign’s first quarter of fundraising; Rogers announced his candidacy on October 1. The campaign will file its first quarterly financial report with the Federal Election Commission by the end of the month; the report will show that Rogers raised over $127,000 from over 330 individual donors in the 4th quarter and ended the year with over $70,000 cash on hand.

The campaign also noted that substantially all of the funds raised came from supporters of the campaign, rather than from large contributions from the candidate or immediate family. “The support donors have shown for this campaign has been truly amazing,” said Rogers. “My team will continue to work hard developing our grassroots support in every county and building on this great foundation.”

Walt Rogers was first elected to the Iowa House in 2010 by defeating an incumbent Democrat. Rogers was elected by his colleagues as an Assistant Majority Leader during his first term; he currently serves on the Appropriations, Education, Economic Growth, Administration & Rules, and Transportation committees. He was reelected in 2012 to represent the new House District 60.

Rogers has been married to Jenny for 33 years; they have three children and seven grandchildren. A graduate of Waterloo Columbus High School and the University of Northern Iowa, Rogers grew up in Waterloo and currently resides in Cedar Falls. Iowa’s First Congressional District consists of 20 counties in central and northeast Iowa. For more information about the Walt Rogers campaign, visit their website at www.waltrogers.org.
