PBS’s Religion & Ethics Newsweekly did a segment on “New Calvinism” and its movement in the Southern Baptist Convention the largest Protestant denomination in North America. It focused on Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, KY, but had interviews with those who are in favor and with those, like the president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, who has concerns.
They also spoke with Al Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and I liked his encouragement over the debate. Basically, isn’t it great when denominations are debating gay marriage that we’re having this debate instead.

I hope that the SBC can live in the tension of the debate. It is something that the Evangelical Free Church has largely been able to do, though I do have to say that many of the younger pastors tend to lean Calvinsim. That is primarily due, I believe, because of the shift happening at the Seminary level.
