The word “Evangelical” has been around for a long time, but today there is much confusion about what it actually means. It is derived from a Greek word that means “the good news” or “gospel”. So its emphasis is the saving work of our Lord Jesus Christ. But it’s meaning isn’t simply that. Historian David Bebbington identifies four distinctives of evangelicalism, two of which fall under this category of the saving work of Christ. Another involves missions. But the fourth is this: “A high regard for and obedience to the Bible as the ultimate authority”. In order to be truly “Evangelical”, the person or thing it describes must have the Bible in view as the final authority.
