Much has been said about tolerance, and much that has been said is incorrect.  Voltaire once said, “What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other’s folly – that is the first law of nature.”  First to tolerate one means that there is something to tolerate.  What is often lauded as tolerance is really agreement.

Second, tolerance doesn’t mean acceptance of sinful behavior, but rather pardoning folly.  We all have sin natures and should bear with one another, but that doesn’t mean celebrating sin.  We can (and must) tolerate those engaged in behavior with which we disagree, but still call the behavior for what it is.
