People often will misquote the Bible saying that ā€œmoney is the root of all evil.ā€  That isn’t what the Bible says.  The Apostle Paul wrote, ā€œFor the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils.  It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs,ā€œ (1 Timothy 6:10, ESV).

Going further – what is at stake here is a question of one’s whole attitude toward life in this world.  What he is getting at is that we shouldn’t confine our ambition, interests and hopes to this life.  This treasure may not be money for some.  It may be a relationship.  For others it may be their house. So He isn’t talking about just love of money, but love of honor, the love of position, the love of status, the love of one’s work in an illegitimate sense.

When this happens these things become our idols.  God is to be our treasure, not the resources He provides.
