People often will misquote the Bible saying that “money is the root of all evil.” Ā That isn’t what the Bible says. Ā The Apostle Paul wrote, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. Ā It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs,ā€œ (1 Timothy 6:10, ESV).

Going further ā€“ what is at stake here is a question of oneā€™s whole attitude toward life in this world. Ā What he is getting at is that we shouldnā€™t confine our ambition, interests and hopes to this life. Ā This treasure may not be money for some. Ā It may be a relationship. Ā For others it may be their house. So He isnā€™t talking about just love of money, but love of honor, the love of position, the love of status, the love of oneā€™s work in an illegitimate sense.

When this happens these things become our idols. Ā God is to be our treasure, not the resources He provides.
