Rob Bell and Oprah Winfrey on “Super Soul Sunday.”

Rob Bell, a one time mega-church pastor, has apparently found a new calling. Bell now lives in L.A., and now has a TV show on the Oprah Winfrey Network. He doesn’t attend an organized church anymore, although he does conduct “retreats” where he teaches people how to surf and how to read the Bible.

Bell was once the darling of many in Evangelicalism until he embraced universalism and denied the reality of Hell. Since then, he’s moved further and further away from Christian orthodoxy, and now says that Oprah “…has taught me more about what Jesus has for all of us, and what kind of life Jesus wants us to live, more than almost anybody in my life.” Friends, if you see or hear ANYTHING from this guy, do yourself a favor and run!

This is Brian Myers with your Caffeinated Thought of the Day.

  1. I don’t think anyone who has read Bell’s work could say he “denies the reality of hell.”

    1. I can, and I did say that because it’s entirely true. I suspect that even Bell, now that he’s in a different situation than he was at the time he wrote his book, would tell you that he denies the *reality* of Hell. To be sure, he might say Hell is some temporal mess we humans have made here on earth, but he clearly denies any conception of a spiritual place of eternal judgement of sin. He believes that to be a “misguided and toxic” notion (that phrase is a quote from his book).

    2. Ditto on what Brian Myers said. Are you sure you’ve read Bell’s work? 🙂 I’ve read all of his books and have probably thrown most of them (figuratively and literally) in frustration with his poor interpretation of the Bible.

Not to say I don’t appreciate some things he has said and done, but he has gotten progressively (or should I say regressively, because I can’t call his evolving theology progress?) off kilter.
