(Des Moines, IA) Iowa House Republicans released their budget plan for Fiscal Year 2017.  The House Republican budget is within the projected on-going revenue for the next fiscal year, which is estimated to be $7.327 billion.

“All too often, elected officials fail to keep the promises they made to voters.  During the last five years, House Republicans have kept our word to the people of Iowa by crafting budgets that spend less than the state collects and lives within its means.  This budget continues to keep that promise.  Iowa families and businesses budget under this common sense approach and government should do the same,” said State Representative Pat Grassley (R-New Hartford).

“House Republicans have offered a realistic and responsible budget plan for the next fiscal year that makes meaningful investments and protects the hardworking taxpayers of Iowa.  Over the last five sessions we have been able to come together with the Governor and Senate Democrats to fund Iowa’s priorities, while also standing by our budgeting principles.  I expect no different this year,” Grassley added.

Included in the House Republican budget plan is an additional $143 million for K-12 schools through an increase in state supplemental aid and the Teacher Leadership and Compensation program.  In addition, this budget plan fully funds the state’s property tax credits, including the Homestead, Elderly and Disabled, and Ag Land property tax credits, as well as the Military Service property tax exemption.

Each budget area target is as follows:

Administration and Regulation

$50.71 million

Agriculture and Natural Resources

$42.84 million

Economic Development

$41.55 million

Education

$983.54 million

Health and Human Services

$1.831 billion

Justice Systems

$738.89 million

Standings

$3.630 billion

TOTAL

$7.320 billion

With targets released, House budget subcommittees will now begin their work to build each individual budget area.
