Recently, astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson wrote an essay in which he summarized the scientific method as this: ā€œDo whatever it takes to avoid fooling yourself into thinking something is true that is not, or that something is not true that is.ā€ He went on to say that objective truths exist outside of oneā€™s perception of reality, and that they remain true whether or not one believes in them. He was exactly right. The problem, of course, is that Tyson does not appear to apply this view of truth to the existence of God. Tyson carefully avoids being categorized as an atheist, but as a practical matter thatā€™s what he is. Like many in science nowadays, he fools himself into thinking that something is not true that is indeed true.
