Rick Bertrand on WHO TV 13

State Senator Rick Bertrand (R-Sioux City) is challenging Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa) in the Republican primary in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. He interviewed with WHO TV 13’s political director, Dave Price, earlier in the week. At the end of the interview Price does a quick six segment where he asks six, short answer questions of the interviewee.

Bertrand was asked by Price, “what part of the federal government would you cut to save money?”

This is typically a softball question because serious candidates typically think about these things. The Department of Education comes to mind for me as there should be no federal role. National Endowment of the Arts is a total waste of money, in my opinion. There are redundancies throughout the federal government that could be streamlined.

I could think of any number of things and I’m not running for office.

Bertrand answered, “You know what? I probably would look at, probably… boy that’s a good one…overall…umm… pass.”

Wow. King’s campaign posted the video on their Facebook page.

It is unbelievable to me that a candidate who identifies as a conservative would not be able to rattle off a quick answer to that. Perhaps if he showed up to more events he would have been asked that already so he would have had an answer ready.

As long as he has an answer for RFS because that’s what counts. He has to keep his backers happy.

If he can’t answer where he would cut the federal government in order to save money, he’s not ready for Congress.
