A re-election bid for State Representative Zach Nunn (R-Bondurant) has become slightly complicated. The first-term incumbent has deployed for 90 days this summer, right in the heart of campaign season. Nunn, a Major with the Iowa Air National Guard, has been deployed three times and has over seven hundred combat hours.

Nunn has also served on the National Security Council as a national counterintelligence officer and director of cybersecurity. This specific skill set is what led to the U.S. Department of Defense specifically calling upon Nunnā€™s deployment this summer. He will be working out of bases in Maryland and South Korea, helping to support both cyber operations and air strikes. He is scheduled to return to Iowa in September.

In a statement given to The Des Moines Register, Nunn said, ā€œIn some ways I think itā€™s a really good opportunity to showcase that, just like our citizen Legislature, we have a citizen National Guard here, and at times you have to go serve the greater good.ā€

Nunn will continue to communicate with constituents via email during his deployment, and says he is confident in his campaign team that will continue working for re-election.

Nunn serves House District 30 which contains a large portion of eastern Polk County. HD 30 is a swing district and he is challenged by former State Representative Joe Riding (D-Altoona) who Nunn ousted in 2014.

Nunn serves on the following committees in the Iowa State House: Administration and Rules, Commerce, Economic Growth, Judiciary, Veterans Affairs, and Ways and Means. He is also an Assistant Majority Leader.
