Associated Press called the runoff in Georiga’s 6th Congressional District special election for Karen Handel. As of the time of this writing Handel, the Republican, leads the Democrat candidate Jon Ossoff 52.6 percent (127,021) to 47.4 percent (114,390) with 99 percent of the precincts reporting in.

This race had national attention with Democrats trying to swing this away from Republicans after Tom Price resigned to become the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Open Secrets reported that at least $56.7 million was spent in this race. According to the Federal Elections Commission Ossoff raised more money from outside the Georgia than he raised in the state.

The election and special elections held prior to this one were seen as a referendum on President Donald Trump. So far, Republicans have prevailed in every race.

In a less publicized special election, Republicans held the seat in South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District as Republican Ralph Norman defeats the Democrat candidate Archie Parnell 51.1 percent (44,889) to 47.9 percent (42,053) with 100 percent of precincts reporting in. That seat was vacated when Mick Mulvaney resigned to direct the White House Office of Management and Budget.
