(Des Moines, IA)  Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs Executive Director Jodi Tymeson announced her retirement Thursday. Her last day at the department will be Friday, November 17, 2017.

“I am grateful for Gen. Tymeson’s tireless advocacy for Iowa’s veterans and their families,” Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said. “Her leadership is what was needed to ensure every veteran receives the benefits they deserve, and her service will leave a lasting impact on our state. I thank Gen. Tymeson for her service, not only to her state, but also to her country, and I wish her all the best as she enters her retirement.”

“Gen. Tymeson’s dedication to Iowa’s veterans and their families will not soon be forgotten,” Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg said. “She was the right person at the right time to lead the department.”

“It’s been an honor to serve veterans and their families at both the department and the Iowa Veterans Home,” Tymeson said. “I’m really looking forward to spending more time with all generations of my family.”

Tymeson retired from the Iowa Army National Guard in 2007 after 33 years of service. She was the first female promoted to brigadier general. Tymeson also served as a state representative for Dallas, Madison and Warren counties from 2001-10.

She was appointed as the executive director of the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs in January 2011 before moving to the Iowa Veterans Home in May 2013. She served there as chief operating officer, then commandant. Tymeson returned to Veterans Affairs in May 2017 to again serve as executive director.
