As of today, we have 1,001 days until the next presidential election in 2020, and Congressman John Delaney (D-MD) thought he would get a jump start on the 2020 elections on Super Bowl Sunday.

His first ad entitled “Dirty Word” first aired during the Super Bowl:

The transcript of the ad reads:

Voiceover

It’s true.

We openly admit it.

John Delaney said a dirty word in Davenport

Then repeated it in Des Moines

And Sioux City too.

In fact, he’s been saying it all

across the state.

Unabashedly telling people he’s

a firm believer in, well…

JOHN

“…bipartisanship…”

“…bipartisanship…”

“…bipartisanship…”

Voiceover

It might be a dirty word in

Washington.

But it seems to be awfully

refreshing right here in Iowa.

The second ad “Early” (an understatement) began airing on Monday in the Cedar Rapids and Des Moines markets.

The transcript of the ad reads:

Voice over:

Most Iowans understand the concept of starting early

After all

There’s an awful lot of work to be done

John Delaney:

How do we bring our country together?

How do we begin to heal a fractured nation?

Voice over:

The work starts now

The two ads are part of a million-dollar, month-long Iowa television buys from the Delaney campaign that will include multiple ads. Delaney made his sixth campaign trip to Iowa over the weekend.

“Iowans understand the concept of starting early.”

Well, not when it comes to presidential elections. We are used to them starting a year to 18-months out from the Iowa Caucus, but launching a presidential bid before the midterm elections is utterly ludicrous and a waste of money.

Congressman Delaney would be better off building a network in Iowa and meeting with fundraisers and Democratic Party movers and shakers. The importance of grassroots organizing is something both Republicans and Democrats value.

There is a bipartisan disdain for political commercials, especially when we will soon be inundated with them for the midterm elections. These ad buys are a foolish move.
