Last time we looked at the first pro-life legislation signed into law in decades here in Iowa.

That 2015 Ultrasound Legislation has led to the saving of unborn babies’ lives. With abortion rates dropping further the following year, this legislation has had an impact!

In November 2016, from the Presidency on down the ticket, pro-abortion candidates and incumbents suffered decisive defeats. The Iowa Senate, once suffocating to pro-life bills, flipped hard as six pro-abortion Senators were removed. 93 of our 99 counties voted against pro-abortion candidates.

Subsequently, the Iowa Legislature, Governor Branstad and Governor Reynolds would begin to pass historic pro-life legislation in 2017-2018. This included sweeping abortion restrictions and defunding a large portion of the tax dollars Planned Parenthood had been receiving here for many years.

Re-energized by these state and national wins, the Iowa Statehouse looked much different, resulting in 2017 legislative victories! Two key priorities, years and years in the making, became reality that year:

Defunding Iowa’s abortion industry

This bill ensured that our tax-dollars moved away from the abortion industry and is sent to qualified medical clinics.

By investing these family planning dollars into community health centers and out of the abortion industry, women are now receiving more healthcare options in more areas of the state, most notably in rural Iowa.

This decisive action by lawmakers halted taxpayer subsidizing of abortion clinics, something many Iowans find unjust. We should not be forced to financially support, with our tax dollars, organizations that are morally offensive.

A 20-week abortion ban

After a years-long battle to gain a pro-life Senate, Iowa finally succeeded in passing life-saving legislation that bans painful late-term abortions.

Iowa had been one of the most permissive states in America, allowing abortion-on-demand, through all nine months of pregnancy.

If you find this article encouraging, just wait until next week’s issue! The 2018 legislative session was bursting with laws that protect our women and unborn children! We are excited to break each of those down with you.

Iowa — where our pro-life lawmakers and Governors have been hard at work saving the lives of as many unborn babies as possible — until abortion is no more.
