U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA)

U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) announced that she was in possession of a letter from a woman who accused Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct. Kavanaugh’s accuser sent a letter to Congresswoman Anna Eschoo (D-CA) in July when his nomination to the Supreme Court was announced. She then gave the letter to Feinstein

Feinstein in a statement said she “received information from an individual concerning the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. That individual strongly requested confidentiality, declined to come forward or press the matter further, and I have honored that decision. I have, however, referred the matter to federal investigation.”

The FBI told the Washington Post that it has no plans to investigate the claim.

We still don’t know the name of the accuser, but magically The New Yorker was able to get a peek at the letter. A letter that, as far as I’m aware Feinstein’s Republican colleagues on the Senate Judiciary Committee has not seen.  They reported:

In the letter, the woman alleged that, during an encounter at a party, Kavanaugh held her down, and that he attempted to force himself on her. She claimed in the letter that Kavanaugh and a classmate of his, both of whom had been drinking, turned up music that was playing in the room to conceal the sound of her protests, and that Kavanaugh covered her mouth with his hand. She was able to free herself. Although the alleged incident took place decades ago and the three individuals involved were minors, the woman said that the memory had been a source of ongoing distress for her, and that she had sought psychological treatment as a result.

Kavanaugh denied the claim. “I categorically and unequivocally deny this allegation. I did not do this back in high school or at any time,” he said.

The Senate Judiciary Committee did receive a letter from 65 women who said they knew Kavanaugh while he was in high school and they vouched for his character.

We are women who have known Brett Kavanaugh for more than 35 years and knew him while he attended high school between 1979 and 1983. For the entire time we have known Brett Kavanaugh, he has behaved honorably and treated women with respect. We strongly believe it is important to convey this information to the Committee at this time.

Brett attended Georgetown Prep, an all-boys high school in Rockville, Maryland. He was an outstanding student and athlete with a wide circle of friends. Almost all of us attended all girls high schools in the area. We knew Brett well through social events, sports, church, and various other activities. Many of us have remained close friends with him and his family over the years. Through the more than 35 years we have known him, Brett has stood out for his friendship, character, and integrity. In particular, he has always treated women with decency and respect. That was true when he was in high school, and it has remained true to this day.

The signers of this letter hold a broad range of political views. Many of us are not lawyers, but we know Brett Kavanaugh as a person. And he has always been a good person.

If this is a credible allegation, then the person making it should come forward (like what we saw with multiple accusations made against Judge Roy Moore in Alabama). Kavanaugh has the right to face his accuser and considering he does not know the identity of this person is it is impossible to defend himself.

Feinstein had the opportunity to bring this claim forward earlier? Why didn’t they? Feinstein would not reveal the contents of the letter, but yet get to read about it in The New Yorker? Why didn’t Senator Feinstein ask him about this during the confirmation hearing? If this is a credible allegation why is the FBI refusing to investigate?

They decided not to investigate because this is not a credible allegation. Sixty-five women, sixty-five have gone on the record in defense of Kavanaugh. A majority of Kavanaugh’s law clerks are female and have had nothing but glowing things to say about him. There has not been a whiff of scandal surrounding this man in the years he served in the White House or on the bench.

She waited over three decades to make this accusation. She did not share this when Kavanaugh worked for the White House. She did not do it when he was appointed to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. She could have approached the FBI at that time, and it would have likely stopped his nomination dead in its tracks. But she didn’t go to the FBI. Instead, she approaches Democratic lawmakers.

Not to mention, he’s passed several FBI background checks. If this indeed happened don’t you think this would have turned up sooner?

This accusation reeks of desperation, and all it does is slime the reputation of a good man. Feinstein and any Democrat supportive of this tactic should be ashamed.
