I’m live blogging Election Night results throughout the night. I’ll be updating this periodically earlier this evening, but it will pick up as polls start to close. Updates will be at the top underneath the line. As always be sure to refresh your browser for updates. Feel free to leave comments about results you see come in. I’m primarily focusing on Iowa races and key U.S. House and Senate races, but may stray beyond that.
12:43a – Final update for the night:
- Current U.S. House Score: Democrats 207 (+24) Republicans 191 (-24)
- Current U.S. Senate Score: Republicans 52 (+4) Democrats 43 (-4)
- Governors Score: Republicans 25 (-5) Democrats 20 (+5)
12:39a – Final update for Iowa results, state-wide elected officials, State Auditor Mary Mosiman (R) was the only incumbent to lose. Her Democratic challenger, Rob Sand, will be the next state auditor. Governor Reynolds (R), Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller (D), Secretary of State Paul Pate (R), Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig (R), and State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald (D) won re-election.
Also, Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa) won re-election, but by a very slim margin for the district. Reynolds obviously outperformed him or she probably would have lost.
12:31a – Iowa Senate Republicans expanded their majority. They flipped four Democrat seats and lost one for a net gain of three. Democrats needed to flip five seats to take control of the Iowa Senate. Republicans will start 2019 with a 31 to 17 majority.
12:17a – Iowa House Republicans will maintain their majority. Democrats needed to pick up +10 to gain the majority. They flipped seven GOP seats but lost two so they only had a net gain of five. There are three races that are still out in two Republicans lead and in one it’s practically tied. So, Republicans will likely come away with a 54 to 46 majority or 53 to 47 majority. Should Republicans lose all three races they will hold a slim 51 to 49 majority.
11:20p – Walker is up by 2000, and votes still out seem likes it would lean for Walker.
11:18p – The Wisconsin Governor’s race is crazy close. Walker is up by 300 votes.
11:12p – Fox News called Iowa Governor’s race for Kim Reynolds.
11:08p – It looks like Democrats have flipped several Iowa House Districts, waiting to make sure they are called before I list them. Republicans look like they will maintain control of the Iowa
11:03p – State Majority Leader Jack Whitver (R-Ankeny) wins re-election in Iowa Senate District 19.
11:00p – Zach Nunn flipped Iowa Senate District 15 for Republicans.
10:57p – At the state level it looks much better. Governor Kim Reynolds has pulled ahead slightly and there is a lot of rural votes to count. Republicans will keep control of the legislature it appears.
10:51p – Iowa GOP is having a bad night. Iowa’s 1st Congressional District and Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District has been called for Democrats. Cindy Axne will represent Iowa 03 and Abby Finkenauer will represent Iowa 01. Congressman Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa) wins re-election in Iowa 2nd Congressional District.
10:39p – Not feeling good about Congressional races in Iowa.
10:27p – State Representative Kevin Koester (R-Ankeny) has lost re-election to Heather Matson in Iowa House District 38.
10:26p – In Iowa 01: 137 of 415 precincts reporting Abby Finkenauer leads Rod Blum 53.4% to 44.2%. Iowa 02: 92 of 397 precincts reporting Dave Loebsack leads Christopher Peters 51.9% to 45.5%. Iowa 03: 219 of 375 precincts reporting Cindy Axne leads David Young 52.5% to 44.1%. In Iowa 04: 188 of 490 precincts reporting J.D Scholten leads Steve King 51.8% to 45.6%.
10:18p – Every U.S. Senator up for re-election in a toss-up state who has voted against Kavanaugh has lost thus far.
10:14p – With 469 of 1,677 precincts reporting the Iowa Governor’s race is tightening up.
10:11p – Dems have picked up 14 seats in the U.S. House. Current scorecard: Republicans 149 Democrats 139.
10:09p – Missouri officially called for Hawley so Republicans have picked up 3 in the U.S. Senate.
10:05p – Zach Nunn currently leads Iowa Senate District 15 with a wide lead with 14 of 33 precincts reporting. This could be a flipped seat for Republicans.
10:03p – Another key race to watch for the Iowa Senate, in Iowa Senate District 7. Jackie Smith currently leads State Senator Rick Bertrand (R-Sioux City) with 9/21 precincts reporting in.
10:01p – Ron DeSantis is now officially the Florida Governor-Elect.
9:58p – With 12/23 precincts reporting Amber Gustafson (D) has a slight lead over Iowa Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver (R-Ankeny) in Iowa Senate District 19. This is going to be a close race.
9:52p – Democrats pick up the Governor’s seat in New Mexico. It was an open seat.
9:46p – Josh Hawley has opened up a big lead in Missouri’s U.S. Senate race.
9:45p – Iowa has 2 of 99 counties reporting according to @IowaSOS, 177/1677 precincts reporting in.
9:39p – Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds trails Fred Hubbell as well, again, Polk County.
9:35p – Cindy Axne leads Congressman David Young in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District mainly because Pok County votes are coming in first.
9:31p – Sununu wins re-election in the New Hampshire Governor’s race, Congressman Jared Pollis wins the Colorado Gubernatorial contest.
9:30p – Scratch that, +12 now.
9:29p – RCP now shows Democrat pick-up in the House at +11.
9:27p – Michigan picks up the Governor’s seat. So Republicans are -3.

9:12p – Kris Kobach loses the Kansas Governor’s race. This doesn’t surprise me. The Republican Party in Kansas is divided and they tend to be more moderate. They’ve also elected Democrats in the past.
9:11p – Ok, Zach Whiting wins Iowa Senate District 1 (he was unopposed). That is a pick up for Republicans.
9:05p -Decision Desk HQ now says Dems are +8 in the House. They pick up PA 03, PA 04, PA 06, PA 05, PA 08, FL 26, FL 27, and VA 10. Republicans flip PA 13 and PA 14.
9:03p – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) is the second incumbent Senator to lose tonight in North Dakota’s Senate race.
9:02p – Mitt Romney wins the Utah Senate race.
8:58p – Decision Desk HQ has Democrats with a +4 in the House. They need +25 to flip it.
8:50p – U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is in a tight race with Beto O’Rourke. He only leads by 0.6 percent with 11 percent reporting in.
8:43p – A tight race in Wisconsin’s Governor’s race. Incumbent Scott Walker (R) trails Tony Evers (D) by 1.3 percent with 25 percent in.
8:39p – RCP House Score Card: Republicans 82 Democrats 74
8:35p – This could be right, but I think it’s pretty early.
8:34p – Fox News projects that Democrats will win control of the U.S. House.
8:31p – The Mississippi Senate special election had a jungle primary. They will have to have a run-off since no one reached 50 percent.
8:28p – With 27 percent in Brian Kemp (R) has a 20 point lead over Stacy Abrams (D) in Georgia’s Governor’s race.
8:25p – GOP holds Oklahoma and Vermont’s Governor’s seats. Democrats hold Rhode Island’s.
8:22p – Real Clear Politics House Score Card: Republicans 63 Democrats 56
8:20p – A third party candidate is making a big difference in Florida’s governor’s race. About 300 precincts left in the panhandle and about 300 in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
8:17p – U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly (D-IN) is the first incumbent to lose in the U.S. Senate tonight.
8:14p – The GOP holds Maryland, Tennesee, and Texas Governor’s seats.
8:12p – The GOP holds Virginia 05, Florida 16, and Florida 18.
8:08p – Joe Manchin wins re-election in West Virginia.
8:07p – Menendez wins re-election to the U.S. Senate in New Jersey.
8:05p – The Tennessee Senate race was called for Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).
8:03p – RealClearPolitics says Indiana Senate race has been called for Mike Braun.
7:59p – House Score Card: Democrats 45 Republicans 41 with 347 to go.
7:56p – Rick Scott (F) has a slim lead over Bill Nelson (D) in Florida’s Senate race – 0.8 percent with 85 percent reporting.
7:53p – Congressman Dave Brat (R-VA) trails Abigail Spanberger by .02 percent with just over 94 percent reporting in Virginia 07.
7:48p – AP calls Kentucky 06 for Andy Barr so the GOP holds this seat. This was considered a bellwether.
7:47p – Ron DeSantis may eke out a win in Florida’s Governor’s race.
7:45p – In Indiana, Braun leads Donnelly by 17 with over 21 percent of precincts reporting in.
7:39p – This is remarkable.
7:35p – Current House Score Card: Democrats 37 Republicans 29 368 races still to go.
7:31p – In Kentucky 03: Vickie Gilsson (R) leads Congressman John Yarmuth (D) by over 30 points with over 47 percent reporting.
7:29p – AP reports that former HHS Secretary Donna Shalala has won Florida 27 which flips this seat for Democrats.
7:27p – Virginia 07 Abigail Spanberger (D) leads Congressman Dave Brat (R) by less than two points by less than 80 percent.
7:24p – Virginia 02 was called for Congressman Scott Taylor so the Republicans keep this seat.

7:18p – In KY 06 with 72 percent reporting McGrath leads Congressman Barr by a little more than two points.
7:16p – House Score Card: Democrats 30 Republicans 22 382 races to call.
7:14p – Andrew Gillum, the Democratic Socialist Mayor of Tallahassee leads Congressman Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in Florida’s Governor’s race by a little more than 2 points with over 53 percent reporting.
7:11p – Florida panhandle counties still need to report so Scott is still in this. The Florida Senate race is too close to call.
7:07p – Congressman Scott Taylor (R) now leads Elaine Luria (D) by more than 2 points with almost 47 percent in Virginia 02.
7:05p – Back to Indiana 02: With almost 28 percent in Congresswoman Walorski is back in the lead by 7.
7:03p – Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner (R) is the first incumbent Governor to lose his seat.
7:01p – U.S. Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) leads Governor Rick Scott (R)by a little more than two points with over 52 percent reporting.
6:59p – House Scorecard: Democrats 14 Republicans 13 with 408 races not called.
6:57p – KY 06 has tightened. McGrath just leads Barr by a little more than three points.
6:55p – It looks like Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) in Virginia 10 will be the first incumbent to lose. She trails by 17 with almost 45 percent in.
6:50p – Virginia 02 – Congressman Scott Taylor (R-VA) trails Elaine Luria (D) by almost 10 points with almost 24 percent reporting in.
6:46p – In Virginia 07 Congressman Dave Brat (R) trails Abigail Spanberger (D) by a little more than 4 points with almost 33 percent reporting.
6:43p – Indiana 02, incumbent Congresswoman Jackie
6:41p – Iowa’s polls close at 9:00p.
6:39p – Right now Republicans have had 9 races in the House called in their favor. Democrats have 7. Only 419 races to go!
6:36p – Mike Braun has opened up a 21 point lead against U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly (D-IN) with under 3 percent reporting in.
6:32p – McGrath leads Barr by almost 9 points in Kentucky’s 6th with 42.58 percent of the vote. If this flips it could be a bad night for the GOP. Right now it is not looking good.
6:29p – Called: GOP retains Indiana 03, Indiana 08, and Kentucky 02.
6:23p – Congressman Dave Brat (R-VA) is trailing in Virginia 7th Congressional District by less than a point with 3.58 percent reporting.
6:20p – I’m back (my wife needed me to bring in groceries). Kentucky 6th could be a bellwether race to watch to see how things are going to go for Republicans. President Trump won this district by 16 points, but Barr is in a tight race.
6:13p – 18 percent reporting in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District incumbent Congressman Andy Barr (R-KY) trails his Democratic challenger Amy McGrath 52.72 % to 46.22%.
6:09p – Fox News Voter analysis states 60 percent said President Trump was a factor in their voting.
6:04p – Braun has an early lead with 4 percent reporting in the Indiana U.S. Senate race.
6:01p – Fox News projects that U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) beats Republican challenger Lawrence Zupan in Vermont.
5:55p – First statewide polls close in five minutes. My dog needs food. I’ll be back.
5:50p – Congressman Steve King denied the Des Moines Register entry into his election night event. I don’t blame him.
5:49p – Some broad predictions: Democrats will make gains in the U.S. House. The question is how many seats they will flip. I think Republicans will expand their majority in the Senate. In Iowa, Republicans will expand their majority in the Iowa Senate. Democrats will make some gains in the Iowa House, but Republicans will retain the majority. I think Governor Reynolds will win. Re. Congressional races, the seat most likely to flip would be in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District. Public polling has not looked good for Congressman Blum so I would not be surprised to see him lose. (Hope I’m wrong.)
5:42p – This frustrates me. The whole IPERS thing is just fear mongering.
5:38p – Enos told me he’s been driving around to different polling places to see how many people have voted, official turnout numbers won’t be available until later from the Iowa Secretary of State’s office. So this is not scientific, he’s just gaging this by precincts he watches.
