On Tuesday evening, Eric Giddens, a Democrat and member of the Cedar Falls School Board, defeated former State Representative Walt Rogers (R-Cedar Falls) in a special election in Iowa Senate District 30. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds called a special election after former State Senator Jeff Danielson (D-Cedar Falls) resigned the seat.

The unofficial results from the Black Hawk County Auditor’s office:

  1. Eric Giddens (D): 7,610 (56.8%)
  2. Walt Rogers (R): 5,631 (42.0%)
  3. Fred Perryman (L): 143 (1.0%)

Giddens edged out Amy Petersen, a professor of special education at the University of Northern Iowa; Tom Ralston, a John Deere employee who was elected president of UAW Local 838; and Sasha Wohlpart, a member of the Cedar Falls School Board for the Democrat nomination during a special nominating convention.

Rogers was the only Republican to seek the nomination in the Democrat leaning seat. Rogers lost re-election in November in Iowa House District 60 ran against Danielson for the Iowa Senate in 2008 and lost by 22 votes.

Fred Perryman filed as the Libertarian Party candidate.

As of March 1st, Democrats held a 812 registered voter advantage over Republicans.
