South Bend Mayor and Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg defended by abortion on during a radio interview attempted to defend abortion suggesting life does not begin until the baby’s first breath. He then cites the Bible in his defense, Alexandra DeSanctis reports at National Review.

She provided a transcript of his comments:

“(Pro-life Christians) hold everybody in line with this one piece of doctrine about abortion, which is obviously a tough issue for a lot of people to think through morally. Then again, thereā€™s a lot of parts of the Bible that talk about howĀ life begins with breath. Even that is something that we can interpret differently. . . . No matter what you think about the cosmic question of how life begins, most Americans can get on board with the idea of, ā€˜I might draw the here. You might draw the line there.ā€™ The most important thing is the person who should be drawing the line is the woman making the decision,” Buttigieg said.

Lila Rose of Live Action provided a video:

First, Buttigieg either has not read or omits Psalm 13-16 which reads, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them,” (ESV).

God certainly did not see that we were without value before we were breathing on our own.

Also, when the Bible speaks about breath giving life, it is God’s breath, not ours that gives life. For instance:

  • “then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breth of life, and the man became a living creature,” (Genesis 2:7, ESV).
  • “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life,” (Job 33:4, ESV).
  • “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host,” (Psalm 33:6, ESV).
  • “Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live,” (Ezekiel 37:9, ESV).

A Bible scholar he is not.
