David French (L) and Sohrab Ahmari

On Thursday afternoon, The Institute for Human Ecology at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC hosted a debate between David French, a columnist with National Review, and Sohrab Ahmari, the opinion editor of the New York Post.

They both represent different visions of how conservatives should respond to the illiberal left. Ahmari contends that social conservatives should use the power of the state to oppose the secular left. French holds to a classical liberal approach.

Ahmari criticized what he calls “David Frenchism” as an approach that will no longer work. French responded with his own column.

The debate was moderated by Ross Douthat, a fellow at the Institute and columnist with the New York Times.
