Gov. Kim Reynolds appointed attorney Dana Oxley, 52, of Swisher to the Iowa Supreme Court on Thursday afternoon to fill a vacancy left by the death of Chief Justice Mark Cady in November. The appointment is Reynolds’ third to the Iowa Supreme Court.
“Dana Oxley is an exceptional lawyer with a uniquely Iowa story,” Reynolds said. “She will be a valuable new addition to the Iowa Supreme Court. I look forward to watching her serve Iowans in this important role for years to come.”
Oxley took time to remember Cady’s service in her remarks after her appointment was announced.
“No one can replace Chief Justice Cady, but I will try to emulate his kind spirit, keen intellect, and servant attitude he brought to the role of an Iowa Supreme Court justice,” she said.
“To my future colleagues on the Supreme Court, I look forward to working together as we wrestle with the important legal issues that come before the court in an effort to provide justice and clarity to the citizens of Iowa,” Oxley shared during her remarks.
“To the citizens of Iowa, I sought this appointment to serve you. I accept this appointment with great humbleness and honor. I promise to uphold the Constitution and laws of this great state, decide cases fairly and impartially, and to administer justice to the best of my ability. I look forward to serving you,” she concluded.
Oxley currently practices law with Shuttleworth & Ingersoll, P.L.C. in Cedar Rapids where she almost exclusively on civil appellate work and motion work. Her clients in her current practice include small and family-owned businesses, regional- sized businesses, and individuals involved in commercial litigation.
She serves as an adjunct law professor at the University of Iowa College of Law. Previously, she served as a career judicial law clerk for Judge David R. Hansen on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Oxley received her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law and her undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa.
Oxley serves on the Board of Christian Education for Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Cedar Rapids. She is also a member of the Iowa State, Linn County, and Eighth Circuit Board Associations.
