During a town hall event in Hampton, N.H. on Sunday, former Vice President Joe Biden calls a woman who questioned his ability to win the Democratic nomination a “lying, dog-faced pony soldier.”
The young woman at the center of this identifies herself as “Madison, a econ student at Mercer University.” Mercer University is located in Georgia, so it’s unclear whether she is a New Hampshire resident who attends school there or if she’s just visiting New Hampshire to observe. (Something the school has done in the past.)
Not that it really matters, but the person whose video I saw of this exchange called her a New Hampshire voter and I don’t think that’s necessarily true.
She indicated that her question was going to be “a little bit mean.”
“So you are arguably the candidate with the greatest advantage in this race,” she said prefacing her question. “So you are the vice president, you weren’t burdened down by the impeachment trials, by having to participate, so how do you explain your performance in Iowa and why should the voters believe that you can win the national election?”
“It’s a good question,” Biden replied. “Number one, Iowa is a Democratic caucus.”
“Have you ever been to a caucus?” he asked the young woman.
She nodded her head yes.
“No you haven’t, you’re a lying, dog-faced pony soldier. You said you were. Now you gotta be honest, I’m going to be honest with you,” Biden responded.
He went on to explain that it was confusing in Iowa and that Iowa doesn’t have the best track record picking the winner of the presidential race.
If the young woman was on a trip with Mercer University she likely did visit an Iowa precinct caucus, a visit to Iowa was part of a trip organized by a Mercer University professor in 2016.
Biden back in December, had a testy exchange with a voter in New Hampton, Iowa calling that man “a damn liar” and “fat.”
The New Hampshire Primary is on Tuesday, the current Real Clear Politics poll average of February polls conducted in New Hampshire has Biden in fourth place.
