U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, during a press avail on Tuesday afternoon with some of her Senate colleagues spoke about the economic success and vision that President Donald Trump laid out in his third State of the Union address last week.

She specifically addressed the pro-growth policies enacted by the Trump administration that, she says has led to a strong economy in Iowa and beyond.

Ernst also outlined her efforts to continue supporting Iowa workers and families by working across the aisle and with the administration to lower prescription drug costs, ensure paid parental leave, improve access to child care, and remove additional trade barriers.

“Well, the President gave a very strong State of the Union address last week, and it told the story of American economic strength. In some of those areas, they touch home in Iowa and all of our states with record low unemployment. Iowa has had below three percent unemployment for months and months. It is very significant for all of our workers. We saw the jobs report with 225,000 new jobs added in January alone,” she said.

Ernst said the nation continues with a “blue-collar boom,” a phrase U.S. Senator John Barrasso, R-Wyo, used just before to describe the nation’s economic growth.

“We need to look forward too; there’s a lot more we can be doing to continue this growth in the United States, and the President spoke to some of that which we will hopefully get to work on together as Republicans and Democrats in Congress; things like lowering prescription drug costs for our patients and consumers, working on paid family time off from work, working on those child care deserts which we have in Iowa, a lack of quality childcare so moms and dad can go to work every day and know that their child is being safely taken care of. And, of course, trade deals, the China Phase One deal, as well as, USMCA, great, great deals, we are glad to have those behind us. However, we have many more trade deals yet to come,” she added.

“So we are in a position of strength right now, economically here in the United States, there are many more things we hope to achieve this Congress,” Ernst concluded
