DES MOINES, Iowa – Secretary of State Paul Pate unveiled a searchable database Monday that allows Iowans to easily locate people available to do remote notarizations. The new feature allows searchers to find remote-authorized notaries by city, zip code and other means. The database is available by clicking here.

“It’s vital that Iowans are able to continue to conduct important business transactions while maintaining social distancing. This database will make that easier and quicker,” Pate said.

The in-person requirement for notarizing documents is temporarily waived for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency, Governor Kim Reynolds declared earlier last month. The requirements are subject to guidance provided by Pate.

Approximately 265 applications to become remote notaries have been approved by the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office. An online application is available at this link.

  1. Yesterday I had a document notarized at the Community Choice Credit Union drive up window. I made sure to take the lane closest to the building so the attendant, who was a notary public, could check my face against the driver’s license photo. She took my driver’s license and the document which I signed in the car while she observed. She then returned the notarized document and my driver’s license. Except for the time waiting in line it was quick. Other banks and credit unions may provide this service.
