DES MOINES, Iowa – U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, criticized Theresa Greenfield, the Democratic challenger to U.S. Senator Joni Ernst in Iowa’s U.S. Senate race, during a press call on Monday.

“We’re less than three months out of what’s a critically important election. And there’s a lot of inconsistencies coming from Teresa Greenfield,” Grassley said.

“Miss Greenfield doesn’t do a 99 County tour like Joni and I do. Doesn’t seem to be accessible. She won’t say where she stands on a lot of important issues. But we see the millions being sent to elect, Miss Greenfield from coastal liberal extremists, and that’s kind of the whole story that tells us everything,” he added.

Grassley highlighted Greenfield’s vulnerability with rural voters.

“When it comes to Iowa agriculture is Greenfield will try to tell us she’s a friend of the farmers. Yet the endorsement from former President Obama implies that Miss Greenfield would support his harmful and unpopular Waters of the United States rule, which obviously, we have gotten completely revised, so it’s reasonable,” he said. “Miss Greenfield has also been endorsed by groups like the League of Conservation Voters and organization that has long poised to force through Obama’s Waters of the U.S.”

Grassley pointed out the Iowa Farm Bureau’s opposition to the Waters of the U.S. rule implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency under President Barack Obama.

“Obama’s Waters of the U.S. rule would have been a disaster for Iowa farmers, and I always quote the Iowa Farm Bureau that it would have regulated waters on about 97% of the land,” he said.

“Joni Ernst and I fought the rollback this reckless rule. Miss Greenfield is once again sided with her liberal environmental groups who support policies that could ruin Iowa’s farm economy, hurt farmers and kill Iowa jobs,” Grassley added.

He also pointed out Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s support of Greenfield and his opposition to Iowa’s ethanol industry. He pointed out that Ernst has fought for ethanol.

“There’s no stronger independent fighter when it comes to ethanol than Joni Ernst. I’ve watched her stand up to Democrats, Republicans, oil state senators, and fight for ethanol,” Grassley said.

“Miss Greenfield in this seat would spell doom for Iowa farmers and biofuel producers, our entire ethanol industry, and the many Iowans who depend on it.”
