VAN METER, Iowa – On Monday, David Young, Republican candidate for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District Seat, announced the members of his Veterans Steering Committee. These women and men are taking leadership roles in reaching out to veterans in their counties and communities to share Young’s record on Veterans’ issues. The committee was launched during a veterans’ round table today with U.S. Senator Tom Cotton, R-Ark.
The steering committee includes U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, an Iraq war veteran from Montgomery County, as well as current State Senator Dan Dawson, R-Council Bluffs, also an Iraq and Afghanistan War veteran, and State Representative Stan Gustafson, R-Cumming, a Vietnam War veteran. Membership represents the Army, Navy, Marines Corps, Air Force, and Iowa Army National Guard.
“I support David Young because I want to see support for veterans and veterans’ issues and I know that David will give us that support,” said Gustafson.
John Porter, an Air Force veteran from Adair County, said, “In this time of political lies and half-truths I feel that David is an honest hard-working man of the people. He is a good friend of veterans and everyone who believes in the Constitution.”
“David Young does an exceptional job of visiting the counties in the district and listening to folks in every county,” said Dallas County veteran Jon McAvoy. “One thing I have always liked that David accomplished was his work writing the Veteran’s Hotline bill. We have to respect our veterans and help them out and David has done just that.”
“I want to thank these women and men for serving on my veterans steering committee,” Young said. “I fought to improve the lives of our veterans while a member of Congress – from improving the Veterans Crisis Line to advocating for the construction of a new Community Based Outreach Clinic (CBOC) in Shenandoah, to giving veterans choice and better access in their healthcare, to ensuring vital funding was available for veterans’ programs from my service on the House Committee on Appropriations. I look forward to working with this group and others to continue to advocate for veterans when I am back in the U.S. Congress.”

Young was elected to serve Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014 and reelected in 2016. He served on the influential Committee of Appropriations. Prior to his service in Congress, Young served Iowans as U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley’s Chief of Staff from 2006-2013. A graduate of Johnston High School and Drake University, Young is a seventh generation Iowan and resides in Van Meter.
