Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920), Dutch politician, journalist, statesman, and theologian who served as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1901-1905 once said about the Kingship of Jesus:
“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, ‘Mine!'”
Jesus is sovereign over His creation, over our relationships, over our homes, over our possessions, over our wallets and bank accounts, our closets, our refrigerators, over our marriages, over our computer screens, over our thoughts, over our business dealings, over our children, our politics, over our decisions – everything. There is nothing that isn’t under King Jesus’ rule and reign.
The Apostle Paul explained this to men gathered in the Areopagus in Athens. We were created by Him and for Him.
“The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he him self gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for ‘in him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are indeed his offspring,'” (Acts 17: 24-28, ESV).
In Him we live and we move and we have our being. What are the limits of Christ’s domain in our lives? It is limitless.
Paul makes this abundantly clear in Colossians.
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together,” (Colossians 1:15-17, ESV).
Christ owns it all. It is all his. There is nothing in this world, there is nothing in this life where he does not have an ownership stake.
Does our life reflect that truth?
