State Representative Walt RogersThe 2nd year of the 84th General Assembly definitely has a different feel to it. We have hit the ground running with several initiatives and bills that the Republican Caucus is putting forth.  Our focus is property tax reform and education reform.

We also have many other bills coming through that are very important to Iowans. I myself am responsible for facilitating 12 sub-committees on bills. Two that seem to be of much interest are HF 2048, banning traffic cameras, and HSB 507, licensure of Naturopathic Physicians.

I have introduced the traffic camera ban bill because many of you have voiced your concern of an increasing culture of camera surveillance that you are uncomfortable with. This surveillance culture is infringing our liberties and as I listen to you, it is apparent that Iowans do not like it. The added revenue stream that this opens up for city governments also becomes an issue for many who think city budgets should at least keep in line with inflation. City governments in Iowa have grown 74% in the last 10 years. I do understand the pressure that our local cities are under when they set their budgets and provide services, but I do not think this revenue stream is the answer.

The licensure of Naturopathic Physicians is a bill that should be given an appropriate hearing. Iowa is one of only 3 states that prohibit naturopathic physicians. My sub-committee will be looking into what is best for Iowans concerning the possible licensure. There is much passion on both sides of this issue and we intend to deal with the facts and make a decision that best serves the health of the people of this great state.
