james-holmes1As I wrote yesterday’s post asking people not to over react to the senseless shooting spree in Aurora, CO I knew some would.  New York Daily News didn’t disappoint in that regard.  In an editorial (yes their editorial, not an individual op/ed) they wrote:

The police chief in urora, Colo., said he is confident that massacre gunman James Holmes acted alone. The police chief was dead wrong.

Standing at Holmes’ side as he unleashed an AR-15 assault rifle and a shotgun and a handgun was Wayne LaPierre, political enforcer of the National Rifle Association.

Standing at Holmes’ side as he sprayed bullets and buckshot into a crowded movie theater were Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, a President and a would-be President, who have bowed to the NRA’s dictates and who responded to the slaughter Friday with revolting, useless treacle.

Standing at Holmes’ side as he murdered 12 and wounded 59 were the millions of zealots who would sooner see blood flow and lives end than have to check a box on a gun registration form.

Ah yes we can’t let a tragedy go to waste can we?  Could they have at least waited until after the funerals before they went on their diatribe.  This is utterly disgusting.  May I remind the editorial board that an AR-15 can’t shoot itself.  Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.  The only thing that would be accomplished by disarming a law-abiding citizenry is allowing criminals to be the only ones with guns.

Like it or not we have the right to bear arms in this country, and Friday there were millions of gun owners who didn’t kill anybody.  However if there were a few of them in the theater in Aurora the outcome probably would have been different.

So let’s mourn the loss, pray for the families of those lost, pray for those who are wounded, and knock it off trying to use this to advance an agenda.
