The Hill commissioned a new poll conducted on September 2 of 1000 likely voters.  It spells very bad news for President Obama.  They ask, “based solely on job performance, does President Obama deserve to be reelected?”

40% said yes, 54% said no, and 6% said not sure.  Among men that gap is larger with 40% yes, but 57% saying no.  51% of women polled said that he did not deserve a second term with 40% saying he did.  A key constituency for Obama in 2008 – 18-39 year olds – 51% say he doesn’t deserve a second term, only 40% of that group believe that Obama does.  Those ages 40-64 only 43% said he deserved to be reelected with 53% saying he didn’t.  With those who are 65-years-old or older only 30% believed he deserved reelection.  As far as income level goes only those who made less than $20,000 (51%) a year and those who made over $100,000 (53%) a year believe President Obama deserves to be reelected.

Only 58% of likely voters are dissatisfied with President Obama’s handling of the economy – 58% of men, 59% of women and 59% of 18-39 year-olds.  Those who are 40-64 years of age 55% were dissatisfied, and those older than 65 67% are dissatisfied. With income level only those who made below $20,000 (52%) and those making over 100,000 (59%) had a majority who were satisfied with President Obama’s handling of the economy.

52% of likely voters believe that the country is in worse shape than it was four years ago.  Only 31% believe it is better shape  56% of men believe it is worse compared to 28% who believe it is better.  47% of women believe that the country is in worse shape compared to 33% who believe it is better.  50% of 18-39 year-olds believe it is in worse shape with 33% believe it is better.  Only African-Americans (65%), Democrats (64%), Liberals (84%), those making less than $20,000 (51%), and those making over $100,000 (53%) thought the country is in better shape.

When asked who they thought would win the presidential election 46% of voters said Mitt Romney, 43% said President Obama.
