Did Congressman Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) really try to paint State Senator Joni Ernst (R-Red Oak) as the extreme candidate on the abortion issue in Iowa’s U.S. Senate race?  Why yes, yes he did in an ad released yesterday.

Here’s the ad.

“In the state Senate, Ernst sponsored an amendment to outlaw abortion even in cases of rape or incest. An Ernst bill would have banned many common forms of birth control. Ernst even wants criminal punishment for doctors who perform an abortion,” the narrator of the ad states.

They include a clip of Ernst speaking and she says, “the provider should be punished, if there were a personhood amendment.”

First, I’m unclear what bill was introduced that would have banned common forms of birth control… are they talking abortifacients?  RU 486?  How many types is “many” – three?  Four?

Secondly, they’re trying to link Ernst with say Todd Akin.  You can’t pull a “war on women” with a female candidate, I mean really? How does that work?  What Braley is saying that it is ok to kill someone because of what their father did.  Is that a reasonable position?  Do we live in a society that it is ok to punish, in this case they get the death penalty (something that rapists and sexual abusers don’t even receive), a child for the sins of his or her father.  If life begins at conception, which is the question that truly matters in this debate, then everything else doesn’t matter.  Mothers don’t have the “right” to kill their born children so they shouldn’t have the “right” to kill their preborn children.  Mothers can’t kill their children based on the father after they are born.  We would consider that murder which brings me to my next point.

Third, how is it unreasonable to think that abortionists shouldn’t be punished for doing an activity that is deemed illegal?  That’s illogical!  The law wouldn’t mean anything otherwise.  She’s not advocating criminalizing moms which most people realize is a political non-starter.  Also have people forgotten states had laws such as this pre-1973?

Braley’s position is really the extreme one as two pro-life advocates point out.

“Congressman Braley’s claim that Joni Ernst has a ‘radical’ position on abortion is laughable, and he clearly needs to look in the mirror,” said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a released statement yesterday.  “In Congress, Braley has been a rubber stamp for the abortion industry. Not only has he voted for taxpayer-funded abortion, he opposed a common sense limit on abortion after 5 months of pregnancy.  Braley even co-sponsored legislation to wipe out all state limits on abortion and enshrine abortion on-demand until birth.”

Abortion on demand is not radical?  Forcing taxpayers to pay for it isn’t radical?  Please.

Jenifer Bowen of Iowa Right to Life emailed me this afternoon pointing out other aspects of his record which should be deemed “radical.”

Attempts by the Bruce Braley campaign to paint State Senator Joni Ernst as “radical” is simply laughable.

Taking a look at Congressman Braley’s record shows us that it is he that is the extreme candidate.

Here are just a few examples:

Braley wants parents to abort their child if it’s a girl instead of a boy.  He voted, “No” to the “Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act” (H.R. 3541) which would have prohibited sex selection abortions.

Braley voted in favor of using live human embryos like lab rats for research. He did this in 2007 when he voted for a phony ban on human cloning, deceptively titled, “The Human Cloning Prohibition Act” (HR 2560), which would have allowed live embryos to be created through cloning, so they could be used in experiments.  It didn’t pass.

Given his clear disdain for the sanctity and protection of all human life, it’s unsurprising that Bruce Braley has a 100% voting score from Planned Parenthood and NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League.)

Iowans have a very clear choice in this U.S Senate race.  They can choose a candidate like Senator Ernst who is willing to stand firm for the rights and protection of all human life, born and unborn.  Or they can select Bruce Braley who is so extreme he supports aborting girls in the womb, simply for being girls.  His is the face of the real war on women.

So if Bruce Braley wants to bring this issue front and center in Iowa’s U.S. Senate race, bring it!  Joni Ernst has way more credibility on the subject than he does.  News flash to liberals… baby killing on demand is what most Americans believe is radical, not protecting innocent life.
